p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
There is one child living in the home. One child has moved out and one child has moved in since the last inspection. The child enjoys a good quality of care that has enabled her to make good progress.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The manager and staff know the child well. Her care plan is individualised and detailed. This means staff have all the right information to provide good care.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child attends school every day. Staff take her to school, which allows her to remain at her chosen school. This is important for consistency and maintaining routine and familiarity.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
This child is supported to maintain positive relationships with her family. Staff work closely with her and her family to ensure that the time spent together is positive. This helps children maintain relationships which are important to them.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child is being encouraged to develop age-appropriate independence skills. The child is supported to develop the necessary skills to enable her to live independently. This is important to ensure children are ready for the next stage in their lives.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s experiences of arriving at and leaving the home are positive. One child has moved on to successfully live with other children in a group setting, in line with her plan.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The home environment is warm and homely. The child has personalised her bedroom. However, areas for improvement were identified, for example, a new bed is needed for the child. The manager had already started to address this during the inspection.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The staff demonstrate good knowledge and understanding of risks to the child. Written risk assessments are detailed; however, they had not been updated so did not contain the latest information. Information about risks was shared with staff during team meetings and handovers. Action plans for managing risk, particularly in relation to child sexual exploitation, required more detail. The manager had begun to rectify this during the inspection.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The child rarely goes missing from home. On one occasion, the missing-from-home protocol was not followed. This did not lead to the child being harmed, however, it is an area that requires improvement. Inspection report for children’s home: SC480429 4 The child is regularly rewarded for positive achievements. These rewards show the child that staff are aware of and appreciate her achievements. Sanctions are proportionate. As a result, staff help the child to manage their behaviours in a safer way.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Allegations against staff are managed quickly and effectively, with all the correct procedures being followed. This means that the children are safeguarded appropriately.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Children are protected by the organisation’s effective recruitment practices. Staff’s backgrounds are checked and they are assessed as suitable before any appointment is confirmed. These procedures promote the safety of the children by preventing unsuitable adults from working with them.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The home is managed by an experienced and qualified manager. It is clear the manager is passionate about the children and has high ambitions for them. The manager will challenge when necessary and advocates for the child.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Leaders and managers have good oversight of the home. The manager knows the home’s strengths and limitations. Effective monitoring and evaluation of the home allow the manager to identify any areas for development and make plans to address these.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
There has been some inconsistency in the staff team, mainly due to sickness. The manager has been proactive in trying to address this. Shifts are covered either by existing staff, regular bank workers or staff from other homes. When possible, these are staff known to the child. Leaders and managers are proactive in their attempts to recruit new, permanent staff.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff are suitably qualified or currently undertaking their qualifications in residential childcare. The comprehensive training programme in place ensures that staff have the necessary skills to meet the complex needs of the children they look after. However, one staff member’s physical intervention training had expired and, while they were already booked on a course, this was identified as a shortfall.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Regular team meetings allow staff the opportunity to discuss any issues in the home and ensure everyone is kept up to date with the child’s progress and any changes in plans. Staff have regular supervision, which is purposeful and reflective. Inspection report for children’s home: SC480429 5
