p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children show that they feel happy, safe and secure in the childminder's care. Children use comfort items from home and settle well into the childminder's routines. Children have regular opportunities to meet others and they demonstrate positive social skills. They are confident to interact with unfamiliar adults. Children develop their communication and language well, including those who speak English as an additional language. Children show their interest in books, sing spontaneously as they play and use increasingly complex sentence structures.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children use their imaginations well. They recognise colours as they build with interlocking bricks and proudly show off their structures. Children show their emotional resilience. For example, they say, 'It's OK' when their structures fall over and they carefully rebuild their creations. Children develop their physical skills well. They use their feet to propel themselves around on ride-along toys. Children understand how to care for living things. They experience how to care for family pets and understand petting rules.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Some information about children is not recorded. However, children engage well in enjoyable and challenging learning experiences. Children respond well to the childminder's high expectations. They are well prepared for their next stages in learning and for their moves to school.

need to do better?

n The childminder does not keep records of children's attendance, as required. The childminder explains how she will rectify this, so there is no significant impact on children. The safety and well-being of children is otherwise assured. n The childminder implements an effective and well-sequenced curriculum. Children make choices about what to do and use accessible resources to support their play ideas. For example, children use shopping trolleys and speak with the childminder about the fruit they intend to buy. n The childminder helps children to develop their mathematical awareness. She plans challenging activities for children, who add up and take away. The childminder sings number rhymes and counts farm animals with children as they play. She encourages children to count in sequence as they use the stairs. n The childminder makes good use of resources in her community to extend children's learning. For example, children gain confidence in their physical skills

during park visits. Children enjoy ball games and make marks on the ground with chalk. Children further develop their social skills as they interact with others in larger groups. n Children behave well. They follow instructions and understand the childminder's expectations. She reads to children frequently and encourages them to interact during storytelling. Children recognise colours, point to characters and turn pages. For example, they have a go at peeling bananas. The childminder encourages children to manage their physical needs. She supports children to pour their own water and to tighten bottle lids. This also helps to develop their small-muscle skills for future writing. n The childminder introduces new words and uses descriptive language. practise their speaking skills. Children build vocabulary well. However, those children who speak English as an additional language have few opportunities to recognise or share their home languages. n The childminder works effectively with parents. She gives useful advice, for example, to support toilet training. The childminder successfully implements teaching strategies that specialists recommend. Communication with staff at other settings children attend is less effective. This hinders a fully consistent approach to children's care and learning. n The childminder completes training to further develop her teaching practice. She attends local forums to share ideas and update her knowledge of current developments.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

In not keeping attendance registers for children, the childminder is unable to fully assure their safety and welfare. However, safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the procedures to follow if she suspects a child is at risk of abuse or harm. She knows where to seek safeguarding support and advice. The childminder recognises possible risks to children, such as exposure to extreme views or behaviours, domestic abuse or the unsafe use of technology. The childminder manages the health needs of children effectively. She manages risks appropriately in her home and while on outings. Children learn about road safety and how to keep themselves safe.
