p.1

The provision is good

Children develop warm and caring relationships with the childminder and her assistant. This helps them to feel safe, happy, settled and ready to learn. Children are kind to one another and happily share and take turns with the resources. They receive lots of praise and develop a strong sense of belonging. Children are well behaved and develop close friendships as they play together. They learn good social skills, such as being polite and using good manners. Children quickly become familiar with the daily routines. They are encouraged to be independent from a young age. For example, toddlers like to feed themselves, and older children independently wash their hands before meals.

p.2

The provision is good

Children have interesting and enjoyable days with the childminder. She plans activities that excite and challenge them. For example, they confidently use their hands and tools to mould play dough into different animal shapes. Children use mathematical language during activities, for example as they count and compare sizes. They learn to recognise shapes and colours. The childminder's assistant interacts enthusiastically with children and keeps them amused during activities. Children of all ages and abilities achieve well and enjoy their time with the childminder.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder recognises the important part she plays in preparing children for school and their future learning. She monitors children's progress regularly. The childminder uses the progress check for children aged between two and three years very effectively. This helps her to identify and address any gaps in children's development. n Children take part in activities which are planned around themes and linked to their interests. For example, children are currently learning about 'Earth Day'. The childminder teaches them about how they can help to protect the environment and animals. She helps children to understand how plastic pollution can harm sea life. Children are encouraged to think about the importance of recycling materials. These experiences help to promote children's understanding of the world around them. n The childminder works very well with her assistant. They share their skills to

provide good care and teaching for children. The childminder has regular discussions with her assistant about his role. They plan exciting activities together that will meet the needs of all the children. The childminder offers good support and guidance to help further develop his practice. n Children are active and enjoy playing outside. They have lots of fun using the play equipment in the childminder's garden. They take turns on the slide and enjoy the challenge of balancing on small stilts. The childminder takes children

20 April 2022 to the local park, woods and soft-play centre. Children benefit from being in the fresh air and develop their physical skills and strength. n Parents are very happy with the care the childminder offers. They appreciate her flexibility and support to meet their families' needs. Some parents have used the childminder's provision for many years. Daily communication and regular updates online mean that all parents are involved with their children's activities and progress. n Children are keen to listen to stories read by the childminder. She introduces books to children and explains the meaning of any new words. The childminder supports children to talk about what they see on the pages. For example, they quickly notice the different types of food as they look at a book about people of the world. Children learn that they can gain information from books, which helps to support their interest in literacy.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder knows the children very well. She is aware of their interests and uses them to provide suitable toys and activities. However, the childminder does not consistently ensure that resources are easily accessible. This means that children do not always have opportunities to make independent choices in their play. n Overall, children's communication and language skills are developing well. The childminder and her assistant continually talk to the children. The childminder asks children questions as they play and explore. However, at times, she does not give children enough time to think and answer for themselves, to develop their language and conversation skills even further.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of their role in safeguarding children. They work closely together to ensure that all children are very well protected. The childminder and her assistant are familiar with the procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child. They demonstrate a good awareness of wider child protection issues, such as radicalisation and online safety. Regular training helps to keep their child protection knowledge up to date. The childminder has robust safeguarding policies and procedures in place. She has been particularly vigilant in following the additional hygiene procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Inspection activities

n This was the first routine inspection the childminder received since the COVID- 19 pandemic began. The inspector discussed the impact of the pandemic with the childminder and has taken that into account in their evaluation of the setting. n The childminder showed the inspector the areas of her home that children access. They discussed how the childminder organises her setting and plans the curriculum and experiences for children. n The childminder shared a sample of documents with the inspector. This included evidence about training and the suitability of those living on the premises. n The inspector observed children, the childminder and her assistant taking part in activities and assessed the impact on children's learning. The inspector and the childminder reflected on a learning experience for children. n Children spoke to the inspector about what they enjoy doing at the childminder's house. n The inspector took account of parents' views through written feedback provided.
