p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder did not notify Ofsted that her daughter was working as an occasional assistant. Children were left alone in the care of the childminder's daughter on two occasions. However, the risks to children were minimised because her daughter has a full range of suitability checks and an appropriate first-aid qualification.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children cheekily tease the childminder and giggle as they do so when they play together. They communicate what they want or need, confident that the childminder will help them. For example, when they need help to get their balance to walk safely around the room, they attract the childminder's attention and she helps them. Children show interest in, and awareness of, the world around them. A child who is interested in vehicles is supported to watch construction vehicles on a nearby building site, which they enjoy. The childminder repeats single simple words, such as digger, to support the child's speech development. The child makes good attempts to copy what she says.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children receive praise and encouragement from the childminder, when they persevere with a task, such as pushing two blocks together, so they are secure. They are pleased when they are praised. Children respond positively when the childminder introduces more challenge and asks them to add another block to their construction.

need to do better?

n The childminder has a good knowledge of child development. She has a strong understanding of how to support children to make appropriate progress. This is particularly so for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The childminder is keenly aware of individual children's needs. She breaks down tasks into small, challenging steps to build up children's confidence and their bank of skills and knowledge. For example, she provides child-sized furniture that is the same as children have at home. This helps them to practise moving from sitting to standing and then progressing to walking, using familiar equipment. n The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities as a childcare provider. However, she failed to tell Ofsted that her daughter would, occasionally, be working as an assistant. Although the arrangement was made with parents to protect the health of their child, the childminder did not gain

parents' written permission for the child to be left with her daughter. The risk to children is minimised as the childminder's daughter has had a full range of suitability checks completed by Ofsted and she holds a current first-aid qualification.

8 March 2022 n The childminder keeps up to date with essential training, such as first aid and safeguarding. She also accesses training to further develop her understanding of how young children learn. Her knowledge and experience have a positive impact on the learning and development of the children. For example, following training on how to communicate with children with SEND, the childminder now pauses and waits for children to reply when she speaks to them. This allows them time to think about what she has said before she suggests a response. n The childminder has familiar daily routines in place for the children to follow. Children know that when they arrive they have a snack and then it is time for the older children to go to school. This helps the younger children to separate easily from their parents and settle into their day with the childminder. n Parents are pleased with the service the childminder offers. The childminder

works closely with parents to make sure that the needs of each child are met. n The childminder has stringent hygiene procedures in place. Visitors are asked to remove shoes, and wash and sanitise their hands as they enter her home. The childminder is keen to protect children with any health conditions from the risk of infection. n The childminder has simple rules in place for the children. She uses the rules to help children to understand how to play within boundaries. For example, the childminder has some ornaments in place that the children do not touch, because they have learned that they are not for them to play with. n The childminder has a wide range of appropriate resources to meet the learning needs of all children. She carefully selects which resources she provides for children each day. This helps to ensure that children's interests are stimulated and their learning and development needs are well catered for.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder's failure to notify Ofsted that her daughter was working as an occasional assistant did not compromise children's safety. The childminder has a secure understanding of her role and responsibility in respect of safeguarding and protecting children. The childminder can discuss in detail the signs and symptoms of abuse. She knows who to report her concerns to and is aware of the need to report any allegations made against her or a member of her household. The childminder has effective risk assessments in place, so that children play in a safe environment. When on outings, the childminder goes to familiar places, so that she is aware of the risks in that environment and of how to minimise these to keep children safe.
