p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not monitor and review her practice effectively and this has led to a number of requirements of the early years foundation stage not being implemented effectively. Consequently, children's safety, well-being and learning and development is not assured. However, children are happy, settled and have trusting relationships with the childminder and her assistant. The childminder knows the children very well. She recognises when children are tired or hungry and quickly tends to their needs. She follows parent's routines from home when settling new children so that they have continuity of care.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children have access to a wide range of resources and play happily inside and outdoors. They make choices about what they want to do, such as play with cars and trucks and adults play alongside them. However, learning is not planned and sequenced and it does not build on children's prior knowledge. For example, a planned painting activity to build on counting skills did not meet the learning outcomes. Some children wanted to sit on the activity, others used bricks to make stamps and some children did handprints or quietly drew circles with their fingers. Although children do learn new skills, much is incidental.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder has changed her setting owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents do not currently enter the play areas when they leave or collect their children. However, information about children's needs are exchanged regularly through discussions and social media. This promotes continuity of care.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder does not keep all the required documentation to ensure that children are safe and protected. For example, she does not obtain all the required information from parents to ensure that children are cared for safely. This includes emergency contact details, name, address, parent details, who has parental responsibility and who the child normally lives with. Accident records are not kept up to date and there is no record of names, times and dates of children's attendance, including who is looking after them. As a result, children are not protected. n Children are not always supervised effectively. For example, children are not always secured in the highchair and scissors are sometimes used inappropriately. This does not ensure that children are safe at all times. n The childminder does not clearly identify children's next steps in learning or use this information to plan meaningful activities for the children. There are no clear

learning outcomes for the activities to build on children's prior knowledge. As a result, children do not focus on tasks and lose interest. This affects children's ability to make good progress.

p.2

need to do better?

14 March 2022 n The childminder encourages children's communication and language skills well. She talks with babies giving close eye contact and waits for a response. This helps babies build relationships and practise turn taking in early speech. n Children effectively develop hand-to-eye coordination and small-muscle movements as part of their physical development. They practise using one- handed tools, such as scissors and use bricks to make marks in paint. n The childminder helps children understand about behaviour expectations in the setting. Children are praised and encouraged for sharing and taking turns. Explanations are given as to why certain behaviour is unwanted and younger children are distracted. Children are encouraged to be kind to their friends. This helps them build good relationships. n Children are supported to become independent, which boosts their self-esteem and confidence. They practise self-help skills, such as washing their own hands

and wiping their nose. They are encouraged to put on their own aprons for painting and they help tidy up the toys. n Children are supported to take manageable risks and have confidence in their own abilities. For example, they climb the slide and go down the chute with agility. n The childminder has sound partnerships with other agencies involved in children's care and development. She has contact with the special educational needs coordinator to support the development of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

There are breaches in the safeguarding and welfare requirements, which means that children are not fully protected. However, the childminder does have suitable knowledge of the signs and symptoms of abuse and who to contact should she have any concerns about children's welfare. She keeps up to date with safeguarding training and all adults in the setting have current first-aid certificates.
