p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder provides an environment that is welcoming and adequately resourced. She observes children and assesses their stage of development. The childminder challenges children so that they reach the next stage in their education and gain the necessary knowledge and skills for their future learning. However, she does not provide enough activities that ignite children's curiosity or provide enough support for children to develop their own ideas in their play.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Relationships between the childminder and the children are very positive. Children are happy and settled. They are confident and sociable, and they behave well. Young children are learning that there are times when they need to share and take turns. Children react positively when the childminder asks them to help tidy toys away. She encourages them to manage their own hygiene and personal needs.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Young children's speaking skills are good. They communicate confidently with the childminder and with visitors. The childminder is a good role model. She supports children to progress from putting some words together to using full sentences. Children practise their handling skills in different ways. The childminder is not currently using her garden for outdoor play, but she takes the children on outings to places of interest.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder's understanding of the requirements of the 'Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage' is not strong enough. As a result, she has failed to notify Ofsted of a significant event which may have had an impact upon her childminding provision. This is a breach of a registration requirement. n The childminder addresses children's health and safety through keeping her statutory paediatric first-aid and safeguarding training up to date. Since her last inspection, she has also completed a food hygiene course. n The childminder does not fully support children's creativity. Her teaching is not flexible enough to encourage children to use materials independently to develop their own ideas. The childminder provides strips of green paper, cotton wool balls, the cut-out shape of a sheep's face, and stickers for eyes. The aim of the activity is for children to create a picture of a sheep in a field. The childminder

gives directions to children throughout the activity. She does not support young children's sensory exploration when they gently rub the cotton wool against their cheeks or rub glue between their fingertips. n The childminder works with parents to help children to settle and then keeps parents informed about their children's achievements and progress. Parents share very positive views about the childminder's provision. They say that the

need to do better?

24 February 2022 care children receive is 'of an excellent standard' and describe a 'fantastic relationship'. Parents say that their children have progressed to being able to hold a conversation and they comment on their children's good social skills. n The childminder is alert to the individual needs of babies while building a close bond with them. She interprets their needs through their vocalisations and provides opportunities for them to develop physical skills, for example through 'tummy time'. n Young children are developing their pretend play. They mimic the childminder while she cares for babies. Children pretend to feed baby dolls and are very proud when they successfully wrap their doll in a blanket. n Children are interested in animals, and they enjoy visiting a local farm and a nature centre. They look at books and the childminder challenges them to find pictures of the different animals that she names. Young children use their good

handling skills while carefully turning the pages in the books. They make the sounds that the animals make and talk about the animals that they like best and the snake that they did not like. n The childminder encourages children to name different colours while they play. Children recite numbers. However, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to support young children in counting and comparing small quantities. n The childminder encourages children to manage simple tasks for themselves, such as taking off and putting on coats and shoes. She encourages children to make decisions about whether they are tired and whether they are hungry.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder protects children from harm. She is aware of the signs of abuse and neglect and knows the local referral procedures to follow if she has a concern. The childminder keeps her child protection knowledge up to date and is aware of the duty to prevent children from being drawn into situations that would cause them harm. She identifies and successfully minimises potential risks in her home. The childminder ensures that the premises are secure so that children cannot leave unsupervised, and unwanted visitors cannot gain entry. She supervises children at all times.

Inspection activities

n This was the first routine inspection the childminder received since the COVID- 19 pandemic began. The inspector discussed the impact of the pandemic with the childminder and has taken that into account in their evaluation of the setting. n We carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment, following information we received about the provider. n The inspector viewed the provision and discussed the safety and suitability of the premises. n The childminder spoke to the inspector about her intentions for children's learning, and the inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and the children. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation and reviewed evidence of the suitability of all adults who live on the premises. n The inspector took account of parents' views about the provision.
