p.1

The provision is good

Children enjoy the time they spend with the childminder. She has a caring nature and children respond well to this, going to her for hugs and when they need assistance with tasks. Children benefit from playing in the safe environment and calm and relaxed atmosphere. The childminder promotes positive behaviour. Children use manners and are kind to one another. They see the childminder demonstrating these traits with her co-childminder and assistants and learn about respectful relationships from her. The childminder is a positive role model to the children.

p.2

The provision is good

Children's learning and development is supported well. They learn new things when the childminder introduces the theme of Fairtrade to them. Children learn about where bananas, pineapples and chocolate come from and how farmers are paid a fair price for their produce. They hear these positive messages from a young age. Older children ask questions about farmers. The childminder discusses what farmers do which develops children's knowledge. Younger children enjoy exploring the textures of and tasting different foods. Children are confident to speak with visitors and name all of the characters on a ball that they are playing with. They scratch their heads when they cannot remember one of the names and say that they are thinking. Soon they remember the name and the childminder praises them for concentrating so hard. Children are motivated to learn.

need to do better?

n The childminder and her co-childminder work closely together with their assistants and form a strong team. Assistants who are completing childcare qualifications are supported well in their roles. They are included in decisions and are confident to give their input and opinions. n Children benefit from eating healthy snacks and meals when they are with the childminder. There is a five-week rolling menu which offers a broad range of healthy, balanced and nutritious options. The childminder works closely with parents to support children who are less keen on trying new foods. She prepares bottles of formula milk hygienically and safely. Children's good dietary health is promoted well as a result. n The childminder recognises that all children enjoy different activities with their families. She aims to broaden all children's experiences by offering new opportunities to them. For example, the childminder takes children on trips

further afield that they may not be able to access without a car. She takes children on the bus into town and to local parks where children have the opportunity to play on large equipment. n The childminder changes children's nappies hygienically and she and her assistant make nappy changing a pleasant experience, especially for children

need to do better?

24 February 2022 who are not too keen on being changed. They chat and sing to children as they change them. This makes routine times enjoyable and supports children's communication and language skills. n The childminder works closely with parents regarding children's routines. She notices when children are tired and knows how each child likes to be soothed to sleep. Children's individual needs are met well. n The childminder has established good relationships with the local schools that children move on to. She shares information with reception teachers and invites them to meet children in her setting. The childminder supports children well for their next stage of learning. She focusses on promoting children's confidence and independence as well as their communication and language skills. n Overall children's good health is promoted well. However, the childminder does not fully consider best practice with regards to hand hygiene. For example,

children frequently use hand sanitiser rather than washing their hands. Before lunch, children all wash their hands in the same bowl of soapy water. This does not fully minimise the risk of cross infection which is particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. n The childminder is good at planning activities for the children and organising the daily routine. She is less confident with opportunities that arise for spontaneous learning. For example, the childminder notices that children enjoy jumping up and down and suggests they play 'hop little bunnies'. This begins positively, engaging the children and supporting their physical development. However, there is too much going on in the room for the childminder to fully focus on the activity for it to be truly meaningful.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements and how to implement them. She ensures to notify Ofsted of any changes to her circumstances and any significant events that happen in the setting. This means checks are undertaken on her ongoing suitability to care for young children. The childminder works closely with her co-childminder and assistants regarding child protection. She is aware of signs that children may be at risk of harm and knows how to report any concerns she has about a child's welfare. The childminder checks on sleeping children regularly to ensure their safety.

should:

n improve hand-washing practices to better support children's good health n improve interactions with children to make the most of spontaneous learning opportunities.
