p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
One child has recently moved out of this home, and one child has recently moved in. Children are helped to build trusted relationships with staff. Staff spend time getting to know children. Staff talk to children about activities and support their likes and interests. Staff quickly found enjoyable activities for the child who has recently moved in.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
During the inspection, observations of the child with staff were positive. Staff were observed taking the child out on activities that he enjoys, for example going to the gym.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children make progress from their individual starting points. One child has recently started school. Staff support him to attend by taking him to and from school. Staff have effective relationships with school staff. School staff describe positive working relationships with staff. They work together to help the child attend education.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child’s plans are individualised. Staff help the child to think about his circumstances and help him engage with challenges.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
When children move in or out of the home, it is managed well by the staff team. Children are welcomed sensitively. One child recently moved out of the home and into semi-independent living accommodation. This was a positive move for the child, and he has maintained contact with staff.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff help children keep in touch with their families. When children are experiencing difficulties with their families, staff work effectively to support children’s emotional well-being.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff spoken to demonstrate an understanding of the current child’s vulnerabilities. There is regular contact with the child’s parents, social worker and other relevant professionals, for example the police and missing-from-home co-ordinator. This demonstrates an all-round safeguarding approach that is effective.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The child’s risk assessment includes his vulnerabilities and what action staff should take to reduce risks. However, staff practice would be enhanced if the registered manager included clearer steps for staff to follow to ensure that safeguarding practice is consistent. This is particularly relevant in relation to substance misuse.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Information regarding the child’s vulnerabilities as a result of mobile phone use is not up to date and recorded in the child’s risk assessment. This has not compromised how the child has been safeguarded, and the registered manager addressed this during the inspection. Inspection report children's home: SC456795 4 There have been incidents when the child has been missing from home. Records demonstrate that staff took appropriate action to find the child. The child experienced a well-coordinated response, including staff searching for him and contacting the relevant professionals and the child’s parents. Staff strive to understand the triggers for the missing-from-home incidents so that they can reduce the risk of this happening again.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff provide clear boundaries for the child. Positive behaviour is promoted. Staff respond well to the child’s individual needs. This has reduced the need for physical restraint.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager is child-focused, and she gets to know the child well. She is approachable, and staff are positive about her management.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive effective support, for example through team meetings. Team meetings are held regularly, and they are well attended. Team meetings keep staff up to date with new information. Staff discuss roles and responsibilities and the child’s progress. Staff spoken to told the inspector that these meetings are helpful.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager works positively with other agencies and professionals. She has built an effective working relationship with the child’s social worker. Social workers were positive about the registered manager and the care that the child receives.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager regularly reviews and monitors any incidents in the home. However, the recordings lack evaluation that would identify any gaps in staff practice. This is necessary to ensure that staff make continuous improvements in the quality of care they provide for children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager does not include her actual working hours on staff roasters. This is a requirement in regulation and is necessary to ensure that accurate records are available if there are any safeguarding concerns.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff spoken to are positive about the registered manager. They describe a supportive environment, and they have a sense of shared ownership of their practice.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff have completed relevant training specific to meeting children’s individual needs. Staff told the inspector that training supports them in their roles. Inspection report children's home: SC456795 5
