Inspection report children's home: SC480502 1 SC480502

p.1

Information about this children's home

The home provides care for up to four children aged up to 18 years old. The home is operated by a private organisation. According to the statement of purpose, the home caters for children who have complex emotional, behavioural and educational difficulties (social and emotional difficulties).

There has been no registered manager since November 2021.

p.1

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged requires improvement to be good at the last full inspection. At this interim inspection, Ofsted judged that it has sustained effectiveness.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Since the last inspection, the registered manager has resigned. A new manager has been appointed. However, he has not yet applied to be registered with Ofsted. Consequently, his suitability remains untested by the regulator.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The children are making progress. Potentially harmful and risky behaviours are less frequent and the children are enjoying new experiences, such as go-karting and work experience on a farm. Education is promoted by the staff, and the children are all engaged in learning through a variety of means, with activities including animal care and learning self-care skills. As a result, the children are supported to develop their own identities and resilience.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Well-thought-out plans have resulted in positive experiences for children arriving at and leaving the home. Two children have moved into the home from another home within the organisation. These children have settled in well. Another child has experienced a supportedand planned move to a semi-independent setting.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The children are focused on the staff’s use of incentives. They are clear about how to earn their favourite activities and have been participating in local go-karting races as a reward. The staff have encouraged each child to have a special interest. As a result, the number of negative incidents have decreased as the children have a positive focus that benefits them.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

When incidents have occurred, the staff demonstrate professional curiosity by reflecting on their practice. In one example, a meeting was held with a neighbouring farm, which resulted in some avoidable hazards being moved. This is a good example of reducing risk to the children.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

During the notice period of the previous registered manager, the responsible individual worked at the home to re-establish a child-focused culture. The new manager is supported by some experienced staff who have come to work in this home from other parts of the organisation. These staff have pulled together as a team and worked to address the previous shortfalls highlighted at the full inspection.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Managerial monitoring is not fully embedded. The new manager has not had the opportunity to complete a reflective review of the service. Furthermore, the independent visitor’s reports continue to lack focus on the views of the children and other key stakeholders. The two requirements relating to these areas are repeated.
