p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children develop warm, trusting relationships with the childminder and her assistants. They readily turn to familiar adults for comfort. Children are happy in the homely environment. While the curriculum lacks challenge, children learn basic language and physical skills. They also learn to share and take turns. Overall, children are well behaved. Parents are pleased with how their children have learned to share since attending the setting. Parents are also pleased that their children's individual care needs are met. This includes the support they have had in working with other agencies. This supports children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The childminder explains how she promotes children's early language through stories, songs and dialogue. This sometimes works quite well. For example, an assistant talks to children about how many pennies they have. She goes on to encourage them to talk about shopping with their mummy. However, stories and songs do not feature routinely. Additionally, the television is sometimes on when an assistant is reading a story. This distracts some children. The childminder follows guidelines for managing the setting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ventilation in the playroom is not always good. However, other procedures to minimise the risk of cross-infection are adequate.

need to do better?

n The childminder knows children well and what they need to learn next. However, the curriculum lacks focus and is not consistently delivered. The assistants sometimes ask children what they want to do rather than offering specific interesting activities. Therefore, children ask to have the television on or they play with childminder's things that they are not allowed. This does not always promote children's progress. The childminder does not consistently support assistants' work. However, at times, assistants promote children's learning by talking to them about their play. They encourage children to talk about the colours of the small cars. n Resources are not well organised. The space meets minimum requirements but is not always used effectively. Some toys at ground level have little educational value and do not interest children. Yet, resources that do interest children are less accessible. For example, buggies and cots sometimes prevent access to the

play kitchen or books. n The childminder does not effectively plan ahead. This interrupts the flow of the day and reduces the time spent teaching children. For example, children become bored while the childminder goes to look for particular resources. She then comes back with something different. She spends time deciding how some children can play outdoors while others are sleeping. The childminder then has

5 January 2022 to rearrange large outdoor equipment with children present. n There are not always enough clean facecloths for children to have their faces wiped after lunch. However, assistants find a spare clean bib to wipe some faces. All children have their hands wiped before they have their lunch. n Inconsistent access to outdoor play affects some children's behaviour. Active children, who have been indoors all morning, become very restless. However, when the childminder organises outdoor play, they have fun on the climbing frames and slides. They develop their physical skills and balance on the scooter. They enjoy splashing at the water tray. Their health and behaviour are promoted more successfully outdoors in the fresh air. n The childminder has acted on the action raised at a previous visit. The premises are now basically clean and safe. She has made sure that remaining hazards in the garden are not accessible to children.

p.2

need to do better?

n Records and other paperwork are generally well organised. However, the registration certificate is not displayed at the setting. Although this is a breach of requirements, it has minimal impact on the quality of provision. n Children's diet is adequate. They name and eat most of the vegetables served with their chicken nuggets and potato smiley faces. They also enjoy their yoghurts afterwards. Children know which is their own drinking water and are reminded to have a drink. They learn to use cutlery well.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder gets to know the children and their families well. This enables her to make sure that they are safe in her care and helps to protect their welfare when they are at home. The childminder's assistants know what signs might suggest a child is at risk of harm. They also know how to secure help for such children. The childminder prioritises important training for herself and her assistants. This includes paediatric first aid and safeguarding. Children learn to keep themselves safe when playing outside. For example. they are reminded to hold on when climbing or when pushing the scooter.
