p.1
The provision requires improvement
Children play in a safe and welcoming environment. Relationships between the childminder and children are positive. The childminder observes children and identifies their stages of development. However, children's learning does not build well enough on what they have already achieved. The childminder does not consistently meet the individual learning needs of children in a small group who are at different stages of development. Children are not encouraged to develop their own ideas, and soon lose interest in activities.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
The childminder identifies that, for some children, the lockdown due to the COVID- 19 pandemic has had an impact on their emotional and social development. Some children are finding it difficult to understand that some things are shared and that sometimes they must take turns. However, there are times when the childminder is not consistent in her management of behaviour, for example, when a child snatches a toy from another child.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children learn to manage their personal needs and understand and adopt healthy habits, such as good hygiene practices. Parents provide packed lunches, and children's good health is addressed well because the childminder is aware of food hygiene requirements.

need to do better?
n Since the last inspection, the childminder has taken some steps to improve her practice. She identifies and minimises any potential risks to children in her home and garden. The childminder has completed training to help her to improve her early years knowledge and has consulted with the local authority adviser. However, in practice, the childminder does not effectively implement her plans to promote children's individual learning needs so that they make the best possible progress. That said, children acquire the necessary skills to help prepare them for the next stage of their learning in school. n The childminder works with parents and other early years professionals to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. She welcomes the guidance provided by speech and language therapists regarding ways to help to promote children's speaking skills. In discussion, the childminder

identifies effective communication and language teaching strategies, but she does not demonstrate these teaching strategies while interacting with the children. n Parents share very positive views about the childminder's provision. They say that their children are very happy to attend, and that she keeps them well informed. n Children have daily opportunities for exercise outdoors in the childminder's

10 December 2021 garden. They have access to toys that help them to develop their handling skills. For example, they connect construction toys and play games that involve the use of tweezers to help them to develop a thumb and two-finger grip. n The childminder does not provide activities that inspire children's curiosity. She does not support children in exploring, investigating and developing their own ideas. For example, children say that they want to draw. The childminder hands out pieces of paper and gives the children wax crayons. She does not offer any other creative play materials, and there are no resources of this kind available for them to choose and select for themselves. n Children count and name shapes and colours while they play. The childminder encourages older children to count quantities up to 10 and match the amount they have counted with a numeral. n Some resources, such as books, paper and crayons, programmable toys, a train

track and trains, construction toys, and puzzles, are stored in the playroom. However, the childminder does not give consideration to offering children choices from the range of play materials that are available. Other resources are kept in a summer house outdoors, and the childminder has not considered any ways to inform the children about what is stored so that they can make independent decisions about their play. n Records, policies and procedures required for the safe and efficient management of provision and meeting children's care needs are well maintained and implemented.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder protects children from harm. She is aware of the signs of abuse and neglect and knows the local referral procedures to follow if she has a concern. The childminder completes training to keep her child protection knowledge up to date. She identifies and successfully minimises potential risks in her home and garden. The childminder ensures that the premises are secure so that children cannot leave unsupervised and unwanted visitors cannot gain entry.
