p.1

The provision is good

Children are happy and independent in their play. They move around the room safely choosing what they want to play with. They make close relationships with the childminder and snuggle close to her to listen to a story about the dentist. Children talk about their experiences of going to see the dentist and cleaning their teeth. They show the childminder how they brush their teeth up and down and to the side. This helps children to learn about keeping healthy

p.2

The provision is good

Children have a positive attitude to their learning. They show anticipation and excitement as they take part in activities the childminder plans. They are eager and engage for long periods of time as they make their Christmas paper jumpers. Four- year-old children concentrate and draw around templates of jumpers and carefully cut them out, demonstrating good cutting skills. Three-year-old children use the small muscles in their hands as they peel stickers to put on their creations. The childminder talks to the children about robins and feeding them in the winter. Children chat about seeing a robin in the garden and say, 'He has a red tummy and sits on the tree'. Children count robins and reindeer stickers and discuss the shape of stars with the childminder. They say, 'The stars are triangles and have points'.

need to do better?

n The childminder reflects on her practice and demonstrates a positive capacity to improve. She has addressed the recommendations from her last inspection. For example, the childminder now has good links with the pre-school the children in her care attend. She talks with staff about the children and collectively they decide on their next steps for children's development. This helps support continuity of care and learning. n The childminder has a curriculum that follows children's interests. She understands how children learn through play. The childminder supports children's language development well. She engages them in regular conversation throughout the day to extend and build on their communication skills. The childminder encourages children to describe what they are doing. For example, children relish talking about making a cup of tea and dinner while playing with the packets of food and equipment in the play kitchen.

n The childminder promotes children's mathematical skills spontaneously. She makes the most of play and everyday routines. For example, she encourages and models counting, as children play a fishing game and count the fish. The childminder helps children to recognise size as the compare the sizes of building blocks. Children know their tower is getting taller and taller. n Partnerships with parents are effective. The childminder talks to parents at drop- off and collection times and explains what the children are learning. She sends parents photographs of what their children are doing so that they can see their

7 December 2021 achievements. Parents comment that the childminder is 'amazing' and that 'nothing is a problem'. They say that she is 'professional and flexible, caring and kind'. n The childminder has clear intentions for how she can extend children's experiences from home. For example, she takes children on trips to the farm to learn about where farm animals live. In addition, she knows the children who do not go to a park. She ensures they visit the local park on a regular basis to help children develop their physical skills and learn to take risks. n The childminder models hygienic routines for children to follow and provides healthy snacks and water to drink. She supports children to develop their growing independence skills. For example, she encourages children to go to the toilet and wash their hands independently. Children feed themselves and are polite, saying 'please' and 'thank you' at mealtimes. This helps children's future

learning and readiness for school. n The childminder encourages positive behaviour overall. Children take turns and learn to wait patiently for their go. This is evident as three- and four-year-old children play with the jigsaws. They help each other and listen to instructions as the childminder explains how to fix the pieces together. However, the childminder does not always make her expectations for behaviour clear. This means that some children do not always do as she intends. For example, three- year-old children continue to play when the childminder expects them to tidy up.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder understands her responsibility to protect children. She has a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms that indicate a child may be at risk of harm. The childminder attends safeguarding training to keep her knowledge up to date. She knows how to report any concerns she may have about a child's welfare. The childminder understands her duty to be vigilant to possible indicators that a child or family may be at risk of being drawn into extremist behaviours. She carries out safety checks to minimise any risks to children. Children are supervised well in all areas of the childminder's home.
