Inspection of Little Bee's Day Nursery & Pre-School Ltd 84-90 Quay Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire YO16 4JB

Overall effectiveness Requires improvement

The quality of education Requires improvement Behaviour and attitudes Requires improvement Personal development Requires improvement Leadership and management Requires improvement Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Inadequate

p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children are, on the whole, happy at the setting. They enjoy playing with their friends and often play well together. For example, older children invent their own game with a fire engine and dominoes. However, at times, staff do not interact effectively with children to guide their play. Therefore, left to their own play, children sometimes disagree. Consequently, they become upset, leave the game and have to be comforted by staff.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children have fun outdoors. The setting provides good weatherproof clothing, which enables all children to take part in all weather. Children splash in the puddles and watch the water change colour when paint is added. They practise their physical skills as they ride the bikes or sweep the yard. Some children are absorbed in their play as they draw chalk shapes on the blackboard.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children develop positive relationships with staff. They readily approach staff when they are upset or need help. The youngest children snuggle comfortably with an adult as they wake up. However, there are times, when key staff are out of the room, that children do not have their needs met. Despite the changing limitation imposed by COVID-19 restrictions, staff, children and parents are developing positive relationships.

need to do better?

n Leaders work with the local authority who help them to improve the quality of the provision. The manager has acted on local authority suggestions and some actions set by Ofsted. This is beginning to have a positive impact. However, there are still weaknesses at management level. Short term remedies to staffing problems ensure that minimum requirements are met. However, poor deployment has created gaps in provision. Staff working with children also attend to administrative, managerial and support duties. They also attend meetings with other agencies. This leaves limited time for effective teaching or oversight of staff's work. Therefore, while children's basic care needs are met, support for children's education is reduced. n The quality of staff interaction with children is inconsistent. Staff, sometimes, join in with children's play and offer them new vocabulary. However, they often resort to repeatedly checking that children can say the names of colours or

shapes that they already know. They rarely engage children in meaningful conversation about their play or interests. This means that children's language remains functional rather than rich and diverse. n Some children have been assessed as needing one-to-one support to aid their learning and development. However, the current staffing levels means that they do not receive this support as often as they should. Nevertheless, children with

p.2

need to do better?

1 December 2021 special educational needs and/or disabilities enjoy themselves at nursery. They have their basic care and safety needs met. n The curriculum lacks ambition and is not always linked to children's interests. Nevertheless, staff teach children basic skills and knowledge within the three prime areas of learning. For example, older children learn the necessary physical skills to use pencils and scissors. Staff attempt to promote children's language through songs and books. Children become increasingly independent. Older children attend to their personal care needs. They wash their own hands before lunch and find a tissue for their nose. n Staff encourage children to count at every opportunity. Children begin to understand about size and shape and use this in their play. For example, older children dress up as builders and use tape measures to measure the pillars in the room. When supported by staff, some children recognise the higher

numbers, such as 20 or 30. n Children enjoy their fruit and milk for snack. They help themselves regularly to their own drinking water bottle. Children's needs in relation to allergies are also met. However, many children do not have a balanced diet. Most children bring crisps and sweets, containing high levels of salt and sugar, along with their sandwiches. Staff in the baby room make sure that those children eat their sandwiches. However, some older children put their sandwiches straight in the bin. This means that they only eat crisps and sweets. Some toddlers become distressed and refuse their sandwiches because they want their chocolate bar. n Assessments of children's learning are, on the whole, appropriate. However, there are times when assessments are not done in time to support the work of other agencies involved with children. This means that the support is not as targeted as it could be.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The manager understands risks in the local community and the difficulties faced by parents. Staff know how to identify when a child is at risk of harm and how to secure help for them. The manager works proactively with other agencies to ensure that children get the support they need, at home and in nursery. Staff working with children have completed safeguarding and paediatric first-aid training. Children learn the necessary skills to keep themselves safe. For example, younger children manage the stairs well. Older children use knives carefully to cut their own fruit. The manager understands what incidents must be notified to Ofsted.
