p.1

The provision is good

Older children progress extremely well in their learning as a result of the childminder's effective curriculum. They are eager to take part in activities and develop essential skills in readiness for school. Older children use impressive language, mathematical skills and literacy skills. For example, children chat away about their recognisable drawings, and read and write their names. They identify numerals on lily pads and place the corresponding number of plastic frogs onto these during an activity.

p.2

The provision is good

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of children have continued to attend the setting. The childminder kept in close contact with families when children did not attend. For example, she communicated through video calls and provided activity packs. This helped to support children's learning and emotional well-being.

p.2

The provision is good

Toddlers, new to the setting, are happy and settled. They have strong emotional attachments to the loving childminder. This helps children to feel safe and secure. Toddlers connect two words to express their needs and babble away as they look at a book in imitation of their older peers. Older children are independent and highly sociable. They play imaginatively and share resources in the role-play kitchen. Children explain that they are making 'Chinese food'. Outdoors, they make concoctions together in the exploratory kitchen, using mud and leaves, such as a 'fruit pie'.

need to do better?

n The childminder continually assesses children's progress in order to plan for their key next steps in learning. She promptly identifies and shares early developmental concerns with parents. The childminder meticulously follows guidance and advice provided by other professionals. Consequently, she supports children's continued development exceptionally well and ensures that all children are included. n The childminder provides a broad range of resources and activities that particularly engage and motivate older children, and focus their learning well. However, she does not plan as precisely to target and support toddler's play and exploration. n The childminder works in close consultation with parents to help children to settle in. She gathers extensive information to find out about each child's uniqueness, their care needs and home routines. The childminder knows children well and adapts the daily routine accordingly, to meet their care needs.

n Although parents are not directly entering the premises, the childminder continues to work closely with them. She encourages parents to view their children's learning journals. The childminder shares children's 'wow' moments

11 November 2021 with parents through photographs and videos. She discusses how they can support children's learning together. n Children have good opportunities to develop their small- and large-muscle skills, which are essential for future writing. Toddlers fill and pour using a jug; they pinch and poke dough, and push the small wheelbarrow around the garden. Older children use a wide range of tools and utensils competently. For example, they use large tweezers to grasp small plastic frogs and place them on lily pads. n The childminder interacts well with children to support their learning. For example, as older children identify numbers on the lily pads, she asks what number comes next and how many more frogs they may need. n Toddlers snuggle up to the childminder for a story. The childminder builds on their language as she asks simple questions and toddlers point to pictures in response. She also provides a commentary during care routines and as toddlers

play, to support their developing communication skills. n The childminder instils essential social skills through her good role modelling. Children behave exceptionally well and thrive on the childminder's praise and encouragement. They readily respond to requests, such as helping to tidy up or washing their hands before meals. Children listen attentively as the childminder reads a story about feelings and being kind. n The childminder supports children's self-care skills effectively. Older children readily put on their coats and wellies, and make healthy wraps for lunch. Toddlers show independence during mealtimes. The childminder supports older children in learning new tasks, such as fastening a zip. n The childminder reflects on her practice in some ways, for example to ensure that she keeps up to date with changes. However, she does not yet precisely target key areas for development, to raise teaching and learning to the highest

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder carries out effective risk assessments to keep children safe and healthy. She has a good knowledge of the signs of abuse and of how to report such concerns to keep children safe from harm. The childminder helps children learn to keep themselves safe. For example, she explains that the dome-shaped climbing frame is out of bounds because children may slip in their muddy wellies. Although the childminder only uses her assistant occasionally, she carries out a thorough induction to make sure that they are aware of their roles and responsibilities. She ensures that they understand child protection issues and have paediatric first-aid training.

should:

11 November 2021 n strengthen the planning of activities and the learning environment for children under two years, in order to support their independent play and exploration to the highest level n reflect on practice further, in order to target areas for improvement and plan continued professional development more precisely.
