p.1

Overall effectiveness Requires improvement

The quality of education Requires improvement Behaviour and attitudes Requires improvement Personal development Requires improvement Leadership and management Requires improvement Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Not applicable

p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children are happy and enjoy their time at the nursery. They play alongside each other, and they demonstrate positive attitudes to learning. Staff meet their children's individual care needs effectively. Children show good levels of concentration when using the tweezers to pick out the different coloured pom- poms hidden in the shaving foam. They develop basic mathematical concepts of colour. Children practise mark making with the paint and tell the visitor they have painted a 'blue bear'.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children enjoy listening to a familiar story and get excited by the hand puppet in the book. They are curious in their play and they show confidence in choosing what they want to do. For example, children are engrossed in the book as they look at pictures of different animals.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children develop their early writing skills as they make marks with chalk on the ground. Although staff talk to children about what they are doing, at times, children do not respond or show interest in what staff say to them. This means children do not develop the skills to listen to adults and this does not promote their speaking skills to become confident talkers.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children are making some progress in their learning and development. They develop some key skills, which will help them in their move on to school. However, leaders' and staff's knowledge of the learning and development requirements is limited. Staff do not consider what children already know and can do. They do not target the children's next step precisely enough on what children need to learn next. This means children do not make as much progress as possible.

p.2

need to do better?

n Parents speak highly about the nursery and the staff. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff adapted the way they work in partnership with parents. Staff delivered food packs to help parents support children's nutritional needs. They also read stories over the telephone to support their children's learning needs. n Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are referred to outside agencies for additional support. Leaders work closely with parents to complete referral forms to initiate involvement from other professionals. Actions from children's care plans are not always implemented successfully. Sometimes, staff do not adapt their teaching for children with SEND. This means that children with SEND do not consistently make good progress. n Leaders are aware of the required progress checks for children aged between two and three years old. They have failed to complete some children's written

summaries in a timely manner. As a result, leaders do not quickly identify if

p.2

need to do better?

21 October 2021 children are at risk of falling behind in their progress. n Leaders have placed an emphasis on encouraging funded children to access their full entitlement of early education. This means all children benefit from the curriculum on offer. Outdoors, the children enjoy putting the coloured balls through the pipes and watching them come out. Staff suggest the children play catch with the balls. Children attempt to throw the balls to the staff and show excitement as the staff catch the ball. n Teaching is not consistent across the nursery. Some planned activities do not provide an appropriate level of challenge for children. While staff model language well, sometimes they ask too many closed questions that only require a one word response. This does not support children to think further for themselves and share their ideas. n Staff comment that the manager discusses their workload and supports their

well-being. However, these meetings are not used effectively to provide support to staff to drive up the overall quality of the teaching. n Meal and snack times are social occasions. Children enjoy talking to the visitor about what they are eating. They show good table manners as they sit together and enjoy their lunch. Children independently pour water into their cups, and they use simple utensils to serve themselves. The manager is continuing to take steps to support parents to promote healthy eating and lifestyles for children at home.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Staff are aware of the signs and symptoms that would make them concerned about a child's safety or a staff member's conduct. They know the nursery reporting procedures and where to find information on local reporting processes. Leaders ensure that staff complete up-to-date safeguarding training. They put extra health and safety procedures in place due to COVID-19. For example, everyone entering the building sanitises their hands. The building is safe, secure and well maintained. This helps to keep everyone safe in the nursery. Vetting and recruitment processes are in place to ensure all adults are suitable to work with children.
