p.1

The provision is good

Children are extremely happy and settled in the childminder's care. They settle very quickly and choose what they want to play with. The calm and gentle childminder ensures that children feel comfortable and emotionally secure. She gathers information from parents about children's routines and what they can already do when they start. Children show positive attitudes and explore the childminder's home with curiosity. The childminder follows the children's lead, allowing them to choose what they would like to do from a wide range of activities and toys. For example, when the children request to do painting, the childminder gets out what they need. She encourages them to make choices about which brushes they would like to paint with and the colours they want to use.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder knows what is expected of children when they start school. She supports their independence well. For example, she encourages children to manage their own personal hygiene and use cutlery independently. Children are well behaved. They willingly follow instructions and show good manners as they say, 'thank you' when the childminder provides resources for them. The childminder encourages children to share toys and take turns as they play.

p.2

need to do better?

n While the childminder is skilled at encouraging children to find their voice and learn to communicate, she misses some opportunities to strengthen children's speaking skills. For example, she does not consistently introduce new words or encourage children to repeat words to develop their speech and increase their vocabulary further. n The childminder builds good relationships with parents. She keeps in daily contact with them and shares information about their children's learning and development. Parents comment on how they are extremely happy with the progress their children have made and how warm and caring the childminder is. n The childminder observes children and monitors their progress. She uses her observations to decide what next steps in learning should be. The curriculum is generally broad, and children progress well in their learning. n Children enjoy outdoor play in a large garden. The childminder sensitively

supports children in developing a can-do attitude to learning. For example, she gently encourages children to go down the slide independently. She praises them as they overcome challenges. This helps to promote children's self-esteem and develop resilience. n The childminder provides opportunities for children to find out about the natural world. The enjoy learning how to care for growing fruit and vegetables in the garden by watering them with a watering can. They excitedly talk about how the water will help the plants to grow.

need to do better?

19 October 2021 n Children have opportunities to develop imaginative play. They play with play dough and pretend to make 'chapatis' in the play kitchen. The childminder joins in with imaginative play, using it as an opportunity to remind children about keeping safe, for example as she pretends the oven is hot and they need to be careful. Children take great delight in playing with the childminder, who sensitively extends their play by responding to their ideas and supporting their suggestions. n Children learn about the importance of healthy eating as part of the daily routine. They enjoy an extensive range of healthy hot and cold snacks and meals that are prepared by the childminder. The childminder provides them with fresh drinking water throughout the day. n Children have many opportunities to develop their early mark-making skills as they happily paint with different tools. They take great delight in making

different patterns and designs with shaped sponges. n The childminder keeps her statutory training updated. However, she has not fully considered ways in which she could enhance her knowledge of how children learn and develop, to build further still on her good-quality teaching.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder ensures that children's safety is given good priority. She supervises them well and checks her premises regularly to keep children safe from harm. She knows how to recognise and promptly respond to any potential concern that a child is being abused. The childminder reinforces children's growing awareness of how hygiene practices contribute to their good health. Children know when it is appropriate to wash their hands, such as before eating. The childminder undertakes relevant safeguarding training.

p.3

should:

n provide more consistent support to help develop children's good language skills further n focus professional development on further enhancing understanding of the curriculum and how to improve teaching skills to the highest level.
