p.1

The provision is good

Children thoroughly enjoy their time at the childminder's setting. They feel secure in her care and are confident to greet visitors to the home. The childminder is alert to babies' care needs. She helps babies to explore new foods and textures, which supports them in their stages of weaning. Children have strong relationships with the childminder and her assistants, who sensitively nurture children to provide them with emotional support when they suffer bereavements. Children who are just starting to attend are very settled and inquisitive to explore their new environment.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are developing good knowledge and skills for their age. Since returning to the setting after the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, children have rapidly expanded their range of vocabulary, with the childminder's support. Children can recognise and name colours, recite numbers and describe quantities. The childminder has high expectations of all children. She adapts her routines to support children to achieve the planned learning outcomes. The childminder encourages children to keep trying when they encounter difficulties, to help them be successful learners.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are learning how to follow rules and regulate their own behaviour, such as sharing and taking turns. They are developing increasing levels of attention, and the childminder is skilfully extending children's concentration skills. Children show good skills in solving problems, such as how to use a vegetable peeler safely.

need to do better?

n The childminder has developed a well-planned curriculum. This is based on children's interests and on assessments of their knowledge and skills when they start attending. She has also updated what she knows about children's stage of development as they have returned to her after the COVID-19 lockdowns. The childminder regularly observes children to help to plan for their learning experiences. She shares her assessments with parents and the staff at other settings the children attend. This helps to promote continuity in children's learning. n Children develop new skills and acquire knowledge in different ways over time as there is good sequencing to activities. For example, the childminder reads children the same story about making soup a few times. This helps children to retain information from the story to recall in the future. The childminder takes children to her allotment to pick vegetables that are ripe in autumn. Through her

skilful questioning, children recall the story and name the vegetables they could use to make soup. Children pick a pumpkin, a squash and tomatoes and learn about what produce is seasonal. The childminder shows children that they can

19 October 2021 use a tablet computer to find a recipe for their soup, which they follow. Children successfully make a homemade soup with the childminder, thinking about how to stir the soup like the characters in the story. They finish their session by enjoying their autumn soup. n The childminder monitors children's progress accurately and identifies where they need further support in their learning, for instance with their speaking skills. She models how to say words correctly, most of the time. However, she does not consistently pronounce the sounds that letters represent correctly to help children acquire these skills as accurately as possible. n The childminder promotes children's healthy lifestyles well. This includes through her curriculum, such as teaching children how to brush teeth to remove plaque. Children learn where food comes from, how to grow and prepare it, and the importance of eating a range of healthy foods.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder has strong ambitions to further improve. She has achieved good levels of practice since her registration. She is reducing her workload well through minimising the amount of unnecessary paperwork she completes. The childminder monitors the practice of her assistants. When they occasionally work with her, she provides feedback to them on how they can better support children's learning and independence. However, there is scope for her to target her professional development more precisely on furthering her own teaching skills. n The childminder provides a range of activities to help prepare children for life in modern Britain. She teaches children about their differences, such as skin tones, and they talk about how they are similar. Children learn to show respect for a range of professions, such as firefighters. For example, the childminder takes children on trips to the local fire station to learn how fire service staff help us.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a sound knowledge of the local safeguarding partnership procedures. She knows how to identify children whose welfare is at risk. The childminder understands what steps to take to help children and their families receive appropriate support from the relevant services. She is also knowledgeable about how to manage allegations against those living and working in the household. The childminder takes steps to help ensure her home and garden are safe. She evaluates risks from any accidents that children have in her care and implements ways to reduce the future likelihood of these. For instance, she has installed non-slip matting on her garden decking to help prevent children from slipping over.

p.3
