p.1

The provision is good

Children are very happy and settled with the childminder. They enthusiastically enter her home and keenly choose from the resources on offer indoors. Children have strong and secure attachments with the childminder and continually engage her in their play. For example, older children ask her to read stories to them and invite her to look for the 'Gruffalo' in the garden. Children behave very well and benefit highly from the positive interactions with the childminder. The younger children enjoy cuddles and having songs sung to them.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations. She knows the children well and plans for their individual needs effectively. For example, she provides specific resources to help the youngest children learn to walk, and helps prepare the older children for school by teaching them to be independent. The childminder arranges personalised visits to find out about children before they start with her so she can cater for their individual needs. She monitors children's progress with parents and other settings. Children make good progress in their development.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder's curriculum focuses on children's communication and language and on preparing the older ones for school. The childminder provides lots of opportunities for children to see print and learn to read indoors. Children access books freely and read them with the childminder. She models language effectively and gives children praise and encouragement as they demonstrate their vocabulary and understanding. For example, while sharing a story, the children recall their knowledge of the word 'cocoon'.

need to do better?

n The childminder supported children and parents well during the COVID-19 pandemic national lockdowns. She frequently kept in touch with families via online meetings and 'doorstep' visits to drop off resources to aid children's learning at home. She also provided parents with online learning links to support children's continued learning. n The childminder has strong partnerships with parents and other providers. She frequently makes contact with other settings to share information about children and to discuss their next steps in learning. The childminder provides useful links via online media to support parents' understanding of early childhood development, how to support good oral health, and how they can further extend children's learning at home. The childminder has very good relationships with parents, who speak very positively of her. They describe her as 'professional', 'caring' and 'supportive'. Parents say that the childminder delivers a 'high level of

11 October 2021 children's well-being and progress through daily updates and photos. n Older children enjoy looking at books and listening to stories. The childminder promotes reading through the use of a book corner in her home. The children sit and listen attentively as she reads stories to them. The childminder encourages the children to turn the pages and discuss what they see. She models and extends their vocabulary well. For example, she refers to the penguins as being 'fuzzy' and 'fluffy'. Younger children delight in listening to nursery rhymes sung to them. The children regularly visit the library. n The childminder helps children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For example, she grows fruit and vegetables in the garden, which the children eat. She teaches children about which foods are healthy to eat through discussions, activities and reading of books. n The childminder plans effectively for children's next steps in learning. She

provides a broad range of learning experiences, which children thoroughly enjoy. Older children concentrate well and show high levels of curiosity, for example when they practise their small-muscle control while making marks with water and playing in the mud kitchen. n The childminder organises walks and outings to provide new and enjoyable experiences for children. These include visits to local groups as well as the wildlife park, wetlands and the beach, where the children took part in a beach clean event. n The childminder plans well overall for children's mathematical development. However, she misses some opportunities to further extend children's knowledge and skills, particularly the most able children. n Children are independent and take responsibility for their belongings. For example, they hang their coats up and use their name badge to self-register themselves. However, outside, resources are not always easily accessible for the

children to choose so that they can increase their independence further and make decisions about their learning for themselves.

She has effective safeguarding policies in place and has appropriate documents to record any matters relating to a child's well-being.
