p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children enjoy positive relationships with staff. Staff offer individualised care to children and know them well. One child shared with inspectors that she feels cared for and that she can talk to staff if she is worried about anything. Observations during the inspection showed that staff are nurturing and attentive to children. This gives children a sense of belonging.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s views are listened to by staff. Children can express their views in children’s meetings and through individual and regular direct work with staff. Children are supported to share their views in relation to food, activities, rewards and the home’s décor, and these are acted on. The registered manager reviews minutes of children’s meetings and will add his comments to what children have said. This personal touch makes children feel valued.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff work hard to ensure that children attend school provision that is suited to meet their individual needs. Staff liaise with teachers to make changes in timetables, and they have accessed additional support when needed, to help children to engage in their learning. There is good communication between staff and teachers, which ensures that when there are any issues, these are promptly addressed.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children have range of positive experiences, and staff support them to pursue their interests and hobbies. One child took part in table tennis tournament and won. Another child has a passion for singing. Children have been on holiday with staff, and during this, they conquered their fear of heights by overcoming tree climbing obstacles. Such experiences help boost children’s confidence while they have fun.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff understand children’s individual abilities and skills. Staff work with children to help them develop life skills, such as washing clothes and cleaning. Staff have also supported one child to understand what she needs to do to keep safe in the community when she goes out on her own; this includes strategies such as maintaining regular contact with staff.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s health needs are being met. Staff liaise well with specialist therapeutic agencies when needed. In addition, the registered manager and staff access support from the company’s in-house clinician. Staff and the registered manager use this resource well, and the guidance received enables staff to gain a better understanding of how to support children.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff support children to keep in touch with people who are important to them. For one child, the registered manager was able to develop a relationship with a parent, which helped the child to re-establish regular contact with their parent. Inspection report children's home: SC388991 4
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff follow safeguarding procedures well. When incidents occur, staff ensure that they inform relevant partner agencies about what has happened. Risk assessments are reviewed and amended following incidents, to ensure that staff know what they need to do to keep children safe. Staff also undertake direct work with children. This helps children to understand concerns for their safety and welfare and think about different ways that they can manage their behaviour and stay safe.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
When children struggle to manage their emotions, staff support them to share their thoughts and feelings. Staff recognise children’s triggers and respond to incidents with compassion and care. Staff follow procedures when children hurt themselves and ensure that relevant advice and support is sought. Staff undertake follow-up work with children to help them reflect and develop better self-soothing strategies.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff working in the home are recruited safely. This good practice ensures that adults working in the home are suitable to do so.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The home’s fire safety assessment is completed annually, and any actions identified are followed up by the manager. Regular fire evacuations take place at different times and locations, which helps children understand what they need to do to keep safe in the event of such an emergency.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff work with children by promoting positive behaviours through rewards and praise. This has led to a reduction of incidents for one child. Staff only use physical intervention as a last resort and such practices are rare. However, after one incident, staff were debriefed by the manager, who was also involved in the restraint, rather than someone independent. In addition, the restraint record did not accurately detail one of the restrictive measures used. As a result, oversight of restraint is not always thorough and effective.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The location risk assessment has been updated but does not contain all the relevant information about the local area. It does not include information about an alleyway adjacent to house, which leads to a park where risks relating to substance misuse are known. The absence of such information does not provide a holistic overview of the local area and the potential risks and vulnerabilities to children living in the home. In addition, possible control measures to address such risks are also not detailed in the assessment.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager is experienced and qualified and has been managing the home for several years. He knows the children and staff team well.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The well-established staff team is qualified and experienced. Staff informed the inspectors that working in the home is like being part of a family. A stable and happy staff team provides children with consistent care. Inspection report children's home: SC388991 5 Staff have access to good training opportunities. Team meetings are also used to reflect on practice and upskill staff. The in-house clinician regularly attends team meetings to go through a programme of therapeutic approaches. These ongoing learning and development opportunities promote understanding and good practice.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager is organised and has good systems in place to monitor and review the service. One parent complaint, received through the independent visitor, was responded to well by the registered manager.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive regular supervision. Records of supervision are good and show how staff are supported to be reflective in their practice.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Professionals are positive about the care provided to children. Two social workers told the inspectors that staff and managers know the children well. One confirmed that when they have raised any issues with the registered manager, he listens and takes immediate and effective action. This gives relevant people confidence in the care the children receive. Inspection report children's home: SC388991 6
