p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

This is a vibrant and welcoming home. It is spacious and airy with a modern decor that appeals to children. A great deal of thought and consideration are given to each child’s needs, wishes and feelings regarding both their bedrooms and the environment. There is limited outside space; however, the space available has been cleverly used to provide opportunities for children to enjoy the sun.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Both children are making considerable progress. They are settled and risk-taking behaviour is minimal. Children have good relationships with their carers, and the dynamic is that of a family home. Each member of the team plays a part in providing an environment where children can thrive. One child explained the skills of each carer, from nail technician to chef.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Key relationships are nurtured, and the team understands the importance of these connections for children. On one occasion, family members were able to stay in the adjoining annex. This provided extended time together for a child and their sibling. Another child has a boyfriend; this relationship is a normal part of teenage life and is supported as it would be by a good parent.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

As this inspection took place at the start of the school term, the inspector was unable to review children’s current progress in education. However, a great deal of planning and preparation have been undertaken to support a successful start to the new term for both children.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

This has been a settled period at the home. Safeguarding matters and incidents have been minimal. Clear plans are in place and effective action is taken when there are concerns.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safety planning is evolving consistently and is fully informed by the registered manager’s reflective approach to practice. This has had a direct impact on the positive progress and outcomes for both children, for example in the notable reduction of incidents.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children are supported to develop healthy behaviours. Children have not gone missing from home in recent months. This was an issue previously for both children. A deprivation of liberty safeguard (DoLS) is in place for one child, which is due to expire soon. There is no longer a need for this level of restriction and therefore no need to extend it.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

One child smokes. Support has been offered to help them to stop this harmful habit. However, this approach has not been successful. Sexual health advice and guidance for children are also lacking. Inspection report children’s home: 2534589 4

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager has excellent oversight of the home. She is a reflective practitioner and is promoting a good standard of parenting to children. Her management of the home is of a high standard.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager is a strong advocate. Praise and nurturing are intrinsic to supporting the development of children’s self-esteem. This can be clearly seen in the progress children are making.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

There is a stable staff team at this home, which is indicative that the well-being of both children and staff is promoted. There is a thorough induction process in place which encompasses both mandatory training and the completion of several shadow shifts. This ensures that staff have the confidence to meet the needs of children before holding responsibilities.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Feedback received from one social worker was very positive; she commented that the staff go above and beyond and are committed to her child, despite several challenges when the child first arrived at the home. A parent also reflected on the good standard of care provided, and told the inspector that this is the best place for their daughter to be. Inspection report children’s home: 2534589 5

p.4

Recommendation

 The registered person should ensure that staff have the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to help children understand, and where necessary work to change, negative behaviours in key areas of health and well-being such as, but not limited to, smoking, sexual relationships, sexual health and contraception. (‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 35, paragraph 7.18)

p.5

Information about this inspection
