The provision requires improvement

Children have plenty of opportunities for fresh air and physical play. They have access to real-life experiences on the farm and benefit from exploring the woodland on site. The manager is keen and enthusiastic to teach children about the natural world around them and where food comes from. Children benefit from healthy meals at the nursery and many of the vegetables are grown on site. The nursery has an eco-schools award which they are proud of. Some children show they feel safe and happy in the nursery. However, some babies and younger children, specifically those who do not have a key person in that day, are consistently unsettled and frequently upset. Furthermore, children's good health is not promoted effectively, specifically in relation to their hygiene. The majority of children are keen to explore and engage in activities, indoors and outdoors. Staff who work with the oldest children have high expectations of them and promote

challenge through their experiences, particularly in developing their literacy skills. However, managers do not support unqualified volunteers enough during their work with babies and young children. This means they do not understand how to meet young children's learning needs throughout the day. In addition to this, some children's behaviour is not managed consistently by staff and boundaries are unclear.

need to do better?

n The majority of children have good language skills. Some staff are skilled in asking open questions to extend children's language further. For example, staff take a small group of older children to explore the woods and find hidden objects. Staff clearly model new words to children and develop their understanding of what they mean. Children begin to discuss man-made objects and natural items, reflecting on where they might be found. n Some staff who work with the babies and youngest children do not have any planned experiences prepared and are not aware of how to set up the environment for spontaneous learning. They have little knowledge of how children learn and limited experience in supporting babies development. This results in limited interactions and experiences. In addition, staff do not teach some pre-school children about letters and sounds because they are not in their final year in the setting. This does not promote high expectations for every child.

p.2

need to do better?

n Staff help the oldest children prepare for their transition to school. As a result of the pandemic, staff have changed the procedures for this and are working in partnership with teachers to ensure children are emotionally supported. For example, they have collected uniforms from local schools to show children what they will wear and have begun to put together a picture book to see inside the classrooms for those who cannot visit. Older children talk excitedly about moving on to school and are keen to join in with activities.

p.2

need to do better?

30 June 2021 n Unfortunately, some children's personal, social and emotional development is less well supported. Staff do not support them in managing their feelings and behaviours consistently and some behaviour is disruptive to children's learning. In addition, children who are new to the setting are unsettled and staff do not use the information provided by parents to support them. They are soothed when staff pick them up but are unwilling to explore their surroundings. n The manager actively promotes healthy diets and fresh produce. Children are proud to show their knowledge of a range of different farming types and have an understanding of different dietary needs. For example, they know some children cannot have dairy and can be wheat intolerant. Staff provide a range of outdoor activities and children benefit from the fresh air in the countryside. n Staff do not consistently promote children's good health in relation to their

hygiene. For example, children are told to go to the toilet in the woodland area with no facilities or ways to wash their hands. Staff change children's nappies without following good hygiene practices, such as handwashing in between each child or wearing protective clothing. n The manager has worked closely with the assistant manager to create an improvement plan which highlights areas to develop across the nursery. Staff have regular supervisions, practice observations and a robust induction procedure to help them understand the expectations, policies and procedures of the nursery. However, staff turnover is high and the manager relies on unqualified volunteers regularly in order to meet staff ratio.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The manager understands her responsibilities as the designated safeguarding lead in the nursery. She regularly holds meetings to ensure staff are aware of the latest procedures and have robust knowledge of wider safeguarding issues. Staff are confident to identify potential signs of abuse, including female genital mutilation. They know who to contact if they are unhappy with a colleague's practice. The manager completes detailed and specific risk assessments which are shared with staff and parents. This helps to keep children safe. The manager has robust procedures to follow to help her recruit new members of staff safely. For example, she obtains detailed application forms to check gaps in employment and ensures staff have an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Information about this early years setting

High Greenbury Childcare was registered in 2019 and operates from a farm in Scorton. The provision is open from Monday to Friday, all year round, with the exception of a week between Christmas and New Year. Daily operating times are from 7.30am until 6pm. Five members of staff are employed to work directly with the children. Of these, three members of staff hold appropriate childcare qualifications at level 3 and the manager also has a primary teaching qualification.

p.5

Inspection activities

n This was the first routine inspection the setting received since the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic began. The inspector discussed the impact of the pandemic with the setting and has taken that into account in their evaluation of the setting. n This inspection was prioritised following the risk assessment process. The provider did not receive notification of the inspection due to the concerns raised. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n Joint observations were completed by the inspector and the assistant manager in the outdoor forest areas. n The inspector held a discussion with the manager in relation to the leadership and management of the nursery. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of recruitment, and staff's qualifications and their suitability to work with children. She discussed children's learning and development with the staff
