p.1

The provision is good

Children show an exceptionally positive attitude to their learning. They are very happy and secure. Children greet each other and staff with big smiles, and leave their parents confidently. They independently select their chosen activity from the thoughtfully planned and varied curriculum. Staff place a strong emphasis on developing children's language development. Children of all ages develop a love of reading and enjoy a wide range of books. They select books independently and listen to staff as they enthusiastically read a story.

p.2

The provision is good

Children behave extremely well. They quickly learn about pre-school routines and the simple rules that are in place for their safety. Staff are good role models and expect children to behave well. Children very confidently talk about these rules and are able to self-regulate many aspects of their behaviour. For example, they independently use sand timers to help them to share and take turns with friends during a variety of activities. Children are independent, well mannered and enjoy helping staff carry out simple tasks. They benefit from being cared for by well- qualified and experienced staff. The atmosphere in the pre-school is calm and productive. Small groups of children play together with great concentration. For example, children enjoy looking at and remembering the names of the different flowers as they use them for an activity.

need to do better?

n The manager is a good leader. She has an ambitious vision for the kind of provision she wants to run. The provider and other professionals support the manager with her plans to enhance the pre-school further. Staff feel valued and appreciated. They benefit from regular feedback about their performance. Staff are given time and support to further their qualifications. n The manager has a clear overview of the curriculum and monitors its effectiveness. She reviews staff's observation records, making sure that these reflect what children can do. The manager supports the staff to identify where children may be falling behind in their learning and takes action to help them keep up. n Overall, staff support children's learning well. They spend a good amount of time joining in with children's play and guiding their learning. Staff know the children closely and talk confidently about their next steps in learning. However, during

some activities, staff do not allow children to share and test their own ideas. Although children enjoy these activities, on these occasions they do not benefit fully to extend their learning. For example, children are not always given time to test how to keep their structure of different sized bricks from falling or how to ensure their flowers stick to their picture. n Staff are effective at supporting children's developing language skills. They

need to do better?

1 July 2021 understand how important this is for children's future learning. As children progress, they develop into confident talkers and communicators. Older children show that they have a wide vocabulary, and are able to answer questions and take account of what others say. n Parents speak highly of the pre-school and the staff. They especially appreciate the regular feedback on their children's learning and the suggestions for activities they can do at home. Parents found these suggestions useful when the setting closed due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. They felt this advice really helped their children to continue to learn at home. n Staff encourage children to adopt habits that contribute to their good health. For instance, children wash their hands thoroughly before they eat and after using the bathroom. Children's physical development is supported well. They have plenty of opportunities to practise the skills they have learned.

p.2

need to do better?

n Staff plan activities to support children's early mathematical development. Children eagerly count the dots on the dice in order to add the right amount of dots to the ladybird. n Children are busy and very motivated learners, who are well prepared for school. They engage eagerly in a wide range of play and activities, many of which support their good language development. For example, during a circle-time activity, children have the opportunity to revisit their knowledge of letter sounds when reading and writing their name.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The pre-school staff have a good safeguarding knowledge and follow well- established reporting procedures. The premises are safe and secure. Staff inform parents if their child has had an accident at the pre-school and of the first-aid treatment given. The manager ensures that staff's safeguarding training and first- aid certificates are up to date. Staff understand the importance of asking questions, reporting, and recording safeguarding concerns, however minor. Staff and leaders understand the procedures to follow in the event of an allegation being made about a member of staff. The manager ensures that all new staff have suitability in place. A robust induction procedure enables staff to have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
