Inspection of Little Angels Day Nursery 56-58 Shepherd Street, Northfleet, GRAVESEND, Kent DA11 9PT

p.1

Overall effectiveness Good

The quality of education Good Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Good Leadership and management Good Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Outstanding

p.1

The provision is good

Children make good progress at the nursery and form trusting relationships with staff. They respond well to the warm greetings they receive when they arrive and are happy to see their friends. Staff understand each child's individual needs well. They provide activities and experiences that children enjoy and that offer a good level of challenge.

p.2

The provision is good

Staff very successfully support children to understand how to behave and to manage their emotions. All children learn to share and to take turns. They are, generally, kind and considerate to others, and staff are effective at helping children resolve minor disputes.

p.2

The provision is good

Children particularly enjoy playing in the outdoor area where they develop their physical skills and learn about nature. They move with good control and coordination as they practise climbing, balancing and steering ride-on toys. Children discuss the plants they are growing and enthusiastically hunt for bugs. They use special tweezers to very carefully collect worms and insects which they place in clear pots. They are excited to show these to staff, and children aim to identify what they have found by referring to a large display of pictures on the fence. This helps them to develop their independent learning skills.

p.2

need to do better?

n The manager has a good understanding of the aspects of the provision that are strong, and the areas where there is room for improvement. There have been a lot of changes of staff in recent months. The new staff members work very effectively together and create a safe, positive environment. This enables children to feel safe and secure. n Staff recognise the unique personalities of each child. They understand what makes each child happy and what may cause them anxiety. This enables staff to ensure that the educational programme is effective in targeting the areas of learning and development where children need the most support. All children are confident to try new things and to learn through exploration and discovery. This prepares them well for their future learning. n Arrangements to work with children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are effective. Staff are quick to identify when a child would benefit

from additional support. They liaise effectively with parents and relevant professionals, such as speech and language therapists, to make sure that children's needs are met. n Staff are skilled at promoting language and communication. They use opportunities that arise to engage children in conversations, ask their views and teach them new vocabulary. Children make significant progress in their speech.

p.2

need to do better?

28 June 2021 Staff are similarly effective at supporting children's social skills and physical development. Teaching in these areas is consistently strong across the nursery. n The organisation of the indoor area is less successful in engaging children's interest than the exciting outdoor space. In most respects this does not impact on children's learning as staff provide such a broad range of activities outdoors. However, the majority of the writing materials and art resources are stored in the playroom and are not easily available to children. In addition, the book area is uninviting and children do not, generally, choose to spend time there. As a result, the opportunities for children to practise their literacy skills or to express themselves creatively are not as effective as those for other areas of learning. n The manager and the staff work hard to form and to maintain good relationships with parents. Parents spoken to during the inspection, generally, felt well

informed and involved in their child's learning. They were all positive about the progress their children were making and said that their children enjoyed attending the nursery. n Children learn to follow appropriate hygiene routines. They understand the importance of washing their hands regularly, and staff successfully help children to manage children's toileting independently.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The manager takes lead responsibility for safeguarding and fully understands the responsibilities of her role. All staff are aware of the potential signs that may indicate a child is at risk. They are vigilant in monitoring children's well-being and know the procedures to follow to refer any concerns. The manager has effective arrangements to ensure that staff maintain an up-to-date knowledge of child protection matters. There are effective risk assessments to identify and to remove any potential hazards, and staff undertake daily safety checks of the premises.

p.3

should:

n improve the opportunities for children to explore a wide range of media and materials, to express themselves through art and design n strengthen the arrangements for children to access reading and writing materials, to help develop their literacy.
