Inspection of Sparkles 133 New Village, Ingleton, Carnforth LA6 3DJ

Overall effectiveness Requires improvement

The quality of education Requires improvement Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Requires improvement Leadership and management Requires improvement Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Not applicable

p.1

The provision requires improvement

Teaching is variable. The arrangements for monitoring staff performance are not yet effective. The manager does not focus as sharply as possible on ensuring that staff understand the skills they want children to learn. That said, children are acquiring sufficient skills to help them move forward for their future learning. However, not all children's needs are met due to weaknesses in teaching and planning. Nevertheless, the curriculum is generally broad.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children are well cared for in this small and friendly nursery. They develop their independence and social skills successfully. For example, they enjoy taking responsibility and feel proud to help tidy away their playthings. Children behave well. They take turns and play happily together. Staff develop positive relationships with children. This builds children's confidence and helps them to settle quickly into the nursery routines.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Staff engage with children as they play. They use lots of repetition of simple words for the younger children. Children enjoy listening to stories and familiar rhymes and join in with the actions and sounds. This helps to build children's listening and communication skills. Staff exchange information with parents about their child's needs on a daily basis and they help parents to support their child's learning at home. For example, during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) lockdown period, staff sent parents suggestions for activities they could do at home with their children.

p.2

need to do better?

n Staff create a calm and nurturing environment. They have genuine affection for children and help them to settle quickly into the nursery. Subsequently, children feel safe and secure, and have a strong sense of belonging. n The manager does not monitor the teaching practice of staff and curriculum planning as rigorously as possible. This results in staff lacking understanding of the purpose for activities and how these support the next steps for children's learning. For example, some adult-led activities are too advanced for children. Children's participation is minimal, and they mainly watch while the member of staff completes the task. Consequently, children do not make the best possible progress. n Despite the weaknesses, children display good attitudes to learning. For example, toddlers persist in their attempts to join interlocking bricks. Older children enjoy drawing and are able to represent what they are creating, for

example 'a bluebell'. Babies are fascinated by the inflatable water mat filled with plastic fish. Some toddlers explore the textures and feel of paint as they cover their hands and place them on paper. n The manager has not ensured that at least one member of staff holds a valid

4 June 2021 paediatric first-aid qualification. Staff have previously completed this training, however. this has not been renewed and is no longer valid. That said, the manager and staff demonstrate that they have the appropriate knowledge and skills to deal with any accidents or emergencies. The manager has made arrangements for staff to renew this training imminently. n Staff are positive role models for children. For example, younger children's acts of kindness are always acknowledged by staff and they help children learn the importance of good manners and taking turns. Staff offer children lots of praise and gentle reminders to encourage them to share and be kind to their friends. This helps to support children's understanding of what is good behaviour. n Staff know children's dietary and medical needs. They provide healthy and nutritious snacks and meals. Staff encourage children to wash their hands at

appropriate times. Children have opportunities to be active. For example, they have daily access to outdoor play. Children create obstacle courses with hoops, they clamber onto the climbing frame and run around playing hide and seek. Staff are careful to ensure children play safely and they regularly apply sun cream to children in warm weather. n Staff exchange information with parents about their child's needs on a daily basis and they help parents to support their child's learning at home. For example, during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) lockdown period, staff sent parents suggestions for activities they could do at home with their children.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The manager and staff have a secure understanding of their responsibilities to keep children safe. They have completed up-to-date training to help them recognise potential signs that a child's welfare is at risk of harm. All staff understand that safeguarding children is everyone's responsibility. They know the correct procedure to follow if they have concerns regarding a child's welfare. Staff carry out effective risk assessments to help provide a safe and secure environment for children to play in.

Information about this early years setting

Sparkles registered in 2017. The nursery employs three members of childcare staff who hold appropriate early years qualifications at level 3. The nursery opens from Monday to Friday all year round. Sessions are from 7.30am until 6pm. The nursery provides funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children.

p.5

Inspection activities

n This was the first routine inspection the setting received since the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic began. The inspector discussed the impact of the pandemic with the manager and has taken that into account in their evaluation of the setting. n The inspector and the manager completed a 'learning walk' across all areas of the setting to understand how the early years provision and curriculum is organised. n A joint observation was carried out by the inspector and the manager. n The inspector held discussions with staff, children and parents at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector looked at a sample of the nursery's documents. This included evidence about staff suitability and training. n A meeting was held between the inspector and the provider who is also the manager.

p.6
