p.1
The provision is good
Children settle well into the calm, well-resourced environment. They access inviting and interesting activities and experiences. The childminder has high expectations of all children in her care. Children follow their interests confidently and take a lead in their learning. They focus on activities and finish tasks to completion. For example, outdoors, children collect water from a container using jugs and enjoy pouring water down guttering tubes until the container is empty. They concentrate intently on the task. Children's attitude to learning is positive. The childminder uses a range of natural and sensory resources. She creates an inspiring environment for children to explore. Children use their imaginations and creativity as they play and learn.

The provision is good
During lockdowns, due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the childminder kept in contact with families through telephone and video calls. She read stories to the children and lent out resources to take home. The childminder drew a chalk hopscotch outside her house for children to use on their daily walks. She used this opportunity to talk with children and parents in person.

need to do better?
n The childminder develops good relationships with parents from the beginning. She talks with parents daily to exchange information outside the setting as children arrive and leave. This supports children's continued learning at home. Parents comment positively about the communication they receive from the childminder. The childminder uses an online system to track children's progress and shares photographs and observations of their achievements. Parents state they particularly like the 'homely' setting and how confident their children have become. n Children behave well. They take turns and share resources, which helps them to develop good social skills. Older children are clear about the daily routines and know the childminder's 'golden rules' very well. The childminder is a good role model. She responds to children's feelings and emotions well. The childminder supports young children to regulate their strong feelings. For instance, she

reassures and talks with them in a positive way. n The childminder gathers detailed information from parents about each child when they start and meets with other professionals to discuss best practice. This helps to give her a deeper understanding of children's learning and development needs. Children demonstrate that they are secure and comfortable in the setting. They engage enthusiastically in activities throughout the day. n The childminder helps children to develop early literacy skills successfully. Children enthusiastically begin to recognise letters in their name. They have access to a wide range of books and enjoy listening to familiar stories. Young children listen with interest and older children talk about the characters and

She also clearly communicates what they will be doing next, to help children's understanding and the smooth running of the setting. She supports children to develop good hygiene habits, such as encouraging them to drink water regularly to stay hydrated. The childminder provides a variety of healthy proteins, fruit and vegetables at mealtimes. This contributes to children's good health. n At lunchtime, children delight in making their own sandwiches. Older children enjoy spreading butter on bread and adding their favourite fillings. Although the childminder's interactions are encouraging, at times, she does not enable children to experiment with ideas through the process of trial and error. For example, when children choose triangle shaped sandwiches, she cuts the

sandwiches for them. n The childminder supports children who speak English as an additional language well. For instance, she uses key words in their home language as well as in English. This helps children to learn English quickly, as they repeat new words and socialise with other children. n The childminder has largely focused her professional development on mandatory requirements and providing a wide variety of play experiences for children. This means that there is little focus on how she can improve the quality of teaching so that children make more rapid progress.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder completes training and accesses local network meetings to ensure her safeguarding knowledge is current. She knows the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. She has a clear safeguarding policy and knows the local referral procedures to follow if she is concerned about the welfare of a child. The childminder understands the importance of maintaining records, such as accident or injury forms, which helps her to promote children's welfare. She takes effective steps to ensure that all areas of her home and garden are safe and suitable each day before children arrive.

should:
n enhance the quality of teaching further so that children experiment with their ideas independently, allowing them more time to work out problems by themselves n extend current reflection and evaluation procedures and use these systems effectively to drive improvements to the highest level.
