p.1
This monitoring visit
This home received a monitoring visit on 27 April 2021. The inspector found that two compliance notices that had been raised at an earlier monitoring visit had not been met. These were in relation to training provided to staff and the monitoring of the home by the registered manager. Those compliance notices were reissued. A further requirement was repeated as it had not been met. A new requirement was made due to a shortfall in the recording of measures of discipline. Three requirements made at the earlier monitoring visit had been met.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The purpose of this visit was to monitor the reissued compliance notices and to consider the other two regulatory breaches. The inspector found that the compliance notices were met, as were the additional requirements. One further requirement is made following this visit. Currently, there are five children in the home.

Staff undertake an improved range of learning to help them care for children. This now includes in-depth face-to-face training, as well as a new online resource. Staff Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: SC455864 2 are more knowledgeable about the impact of trauma on children. This is reflected in their responses to children who experience difficulties. The new learning helps staff to be more confident and effective carers. As a result, children respond well to staff and the number of incidents has reduced significantly.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Staff meet regularly with the therapeutic lead to reflect on their practice. This helps to embed their learning in their day-to-day care of children. These discussions increase the value of training sessions. Staff are becoming familiar with examining their own impact on the children, which supports a learning culture. The approach to staff training means that children receive timely and individualised care, taking into account what matters to them most.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The registered manager now monitors the service effectively. New systems focus on the impact on children of the care they receive. Changes to care plans can be made swiftly, as a result. An emphasis on reflective practice helps to identify shortfalls in staff performance. Additional advice or training is provided when required. The improved monitoring of the service means that children receive effective care from staff who are supported to perform well.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The rate of staff turnover is now low. Children who had worried about so many staff leaving are building good relationships with their new carers. New members of staff have relevant experience or have knowledge that complements the existing team. As a result, children are being cared for by staff they know well and who are becoming skilled at meeting their needs.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The registered manager is taking steps to ensure that children move on from the home in a planned way. Independence work with older children is individualised. This takes account of children’s changing needs, for example to spend more time with friends and family. Children are involved in their care planning. This helps them to engage in how their lives as young adults will be arranged. This empowers children and helps them to develop their sense of self-worth.
p.2
This monitoring visit
There have been very few incidents when staff have intervened with children. On such occasions, the recording of these events is clear. Children’s views are highlighted in the record and they are encouraged to sign what has been written about them. This gives children a powerful message that their views matter. This is essential if they are to develop positive self-esteem.
p.2
This monitoring visit
On one occasion, a member of staff did not follow a child’s risk assessment. The member of staff rectified their mistake as soon as possible. Although this incident upset the child, they did not suffer any harm. Following the inspection, the registered manager did some work with staff to ensure that this lapse in practice does not happen again.
p.2
This monitoring visit
