The provision is good
Children play in a safe and secure environment. They demonstrate that they are happy and settled. For instance, children show good levels of confidence as they move around and lead their own play. Children experience positive interactions from the childminder. They receive lots of reassurance and cuddles throughout the day. This helps to support children's emotional well-being, particularly those who have recently joined the setting. Children behave well. They show care and concern for their friends. For example, while their friends are asleep, older children remind the childminder that 'we have to be quiet.' There is a wide variety of activities that engage children well in learning. For example, the childminder engages older children in role play to help develop their creativity and imagination. While the youngest children practise their fine motor skills as they post pom-poms into different sized cardboard boxes. The childminder has high expectations of

what children can do for themselves. For example, she affords children time to have a go at putting on their own coat and shoes for outdoor play. This helps children to be independent learners. Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They have positive attitudes to learning.

need to do better?
n The childminder has made some changes to the organisation of the setting in response to COVID-19 (coronavirus) safety guidelines. For example, she has introduced new drop-off and collection practices for parents to minimise contact between adults. This is working well and has helped children to settle quickly. n The childminder uses the information gained from her accurate observations and assessments of children's learning to plan a wide variety of activities. For example, children visited a farm recently to support their interest in animals. This was followed by a sensory activity to help children recall what they have learned during their outing. n The childminder supports children well in building their communication and language skills. For example, she engages children in meaningful conversations to keep them motivated to play. Children listen and respond positively. However, at times, the childminder does not make best use of opportunities to

20 May 2021 information with parents to support children's learning at home. Parents commented how much their children enjoy being with the childminder. However, partnerships with other settings that children attend are not fully established. n The childminder is a positive role model to the children. She teaches children to say please and thank you, when they take turns and share toys. Children are developing good manners. n The childminder makes effective use of nursery songs and rhymes. For example, she enthusiastically sings as she teaches children to wash their hands. Children enjoy singing along. This practice contributes to making hand-washing routines fun while teaching children about healthy habits. n The childminder is committed to improving her knowledge and teaching skills. For example, she attended training recently to raise her awareness of mental health issues in children and how to support them.

n The childminder evaluates her provision regularly to raise the standards. This is demonstrated in how she has reviewed the outdoor provision to support children who learn best in an outdoor environment.

Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Safeguarding
Supervision of children is well planned. The childminder ensures that children are within her sight or hearing at all times to help keep them safe. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding issues, including signs of neglect. She talks confidently about the procedures to follow should there be any concerns about a child's welfare. There are rigorous risk assessments in place to minimise the risks to children as they play indoors and outdoors. The childminder monitors children's attendance for any concerns.
