Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: SC457308 1 SC457308
p.1
Cambian Childcare Limited
Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
A private provider operates and manages this home. It is registered to provide care for up to five children who have behavioural, emotional and/or social difficulties. The appropriately qualified registered manager has been in the role since the home registered in 2012.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The home was last visited in June 2019, when a full inspection was carried out. Due to the restrictions in place relating to COVID-19 (coronavirus), the current visit was carried out off site. The visit was undertaken to investigate potential breaches of regulations in relation to the management of transitions into and out of the home, children and behaviour, and serious incidents. The visit included a review of documents, and discussions with children, staff and relevant professionals.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The staff support children to settle into the home. They work closely with other professionals to understand and manage behaviours related to fluctuating mental health and associated risks. Staff are available to the children when they want to discuss their feelings or seek advice, help and support.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Children feel safe, make progress, and want to remain in the home even after they reach adulthood. Staff help children to gain independence skills and become proficient doing everyday tasks and activities, ready for when they move out.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The children mostly enjoy good relationships with each other, but occasionally argue or fall out. When this happens, the staff support them to spend time apart and understand their feelings. This encourages the children to be tolerant of each other.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Staff understand the risks to the children and take steps to stop them hurting themselves or misusing substances or alcohol. When children go missing from the home, staff work with police and mental health crisis services to return them home Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: SC457308 2 safely, as quickly as possible. However, some staff are not fully aware of changes in the police process for finding missing children. Although this does not prevent staff from taking action, it does mean there is a lack of consistency in their understanding of what information to pass to the police and when to do this.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Managers mitigate risks by following the advice of health specialists and ensuring that staff keep plans and records up to date. Staff get advice from clinicians which helps them to know how to respond to the children to help them manage their feelings. There are frequent incidents of children becoming emotionally distressed. During these times, staff will follow plans and support the children through the period of crisis and beyond.
p.2
This monitoring visit
On two occasions, the manager has failed to notify Ofsted of serious incidents involving the children. This does not allow Ofsted to have oversight of practice within the home, and therefore does not promote the safety and well-being of the children.
p.2
This monitoring visit
There were two recommendations made at the previous inspection which have been met. There were also two further recommendations and two requirements from the previous inspection, which were not considered during this monitoring visit and therefore will be carried forward.
