p.1

Hexagon Care Services Limited

Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The home is a privately run children’s home. It provides care and accommodation for up to three children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The home was registered with Ofsted in November 2020 and has not yet had a full inspection.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Due to the restrictions in place relating to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, this monitoring visit was carried out off site. The visit was undertaken to explore potential breaches of regulations, following information being shared with Ofsted in notifications that indicated a potential risk of harm to children. The visit included a review of documents, a virtual tour of the building and discussions with children, staff and relevant professionals.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The in-house psychologist supports staff to develop therapeutic care responses to the children, through bespoke training and reflective sessions. This enables the children to build positive relationships with the staff.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The staff provide a therapeutic and nurturing home environment which enables the children to begin to address their emotional needs. The children enjoy good structure, routines and boundaries, which helps to keep them safe and reduce any anxieties they may have.

p.1

This monitoring visit

There are comprehensive individual risk assessments, risk-reduction plans and behaviour-support plans in place. These records address the children’s known risks and vulnerabilities and provide staff with up-to-date information on how the children’s needs can be met. As a result, staff are better informed and are able to better protect the children in their care. Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: 2604035 2 Staff said they are supported to develop in their roles. They attend training, and have team meetings and daily handovers. However, some staff have not had access to regular supervision. This means that some staff are not able to receive the support they need to consistently reflect on and develop their practice. The manager is aware of this shortfall and is taking steps to address it.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Physical intervention has been used appropriately when children are at risk of harm to themselves or others. However, the overall quality of physical intervention records is variable. For example, it is not clear when debriefs with children and staff have taken place. Furthermore, the manager does not review these records for effectiveness in a timely manner. This does not help the manager to understand why the intervention was required.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The staff help children to take part in a variety of activities. These include trips out, playing games and looking after their pet guinea pigs. All of these activities have helped the children’s emotional well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The manager is aware of the areas for development in the home and has an action plan in place to address these. The plan includes additional training and development opportunities for staff, and promoting good-quality care. The focus of the plan is on providing children with stability and opportunities to achieve.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Professionals spoken to during the visit said the home is a positive and nurturing environment. They confirmed that children make progress and have good relationships with the staff. Professionals said that the staff are resilient and work effectively with professionals and families. This helps to ensure that the holistic care needs of the children are met.
