Information about this children’s home
The registered manager of this home has been in post since 2017.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This home was previously inspected in January 2020, and was judged outstanding. This monitoring visit has taken place due to a concerning notification sent by the home to Ofsted in February of this year.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The visit was carried out remotely. It included video and telephone conversations with the child and staff, and the examination of written evidence.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The inspector’s discussion with the child and written feedback indicated clearly that the child feels happy and settled in this home. The child said, ‘I love being here,’ and talked about her only regret being that she did not come to live in the home earlier. The responses to Ofsted’s recent survey are unanimously positive from the child, her family, staff in the home and external professionals. The child’s social worker said that she has ‘every confidence’ in the manager and has noted that incidents of self- harm have reduced significantly. She described the team as ‘brilliant, empathetic and responsive’.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The safeguarding notification that was received described a series of events that resulted in the child being at risk of harm. Managers did not consider the factors carefully enough when making decisions on specific arrangements about the child’s care. Furthermore, a child protection issue then arose that was not initially recognised as such by the manager or other professionals. Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: SC471038 2 Following these events, the manager acted effectively to keep the child safe and took appropriate action. During the monitoring visit, the manager and responsible individual professionally and transparently acknowledged the lessons to be learned. The manager also immediately started to remedy the child’s safety plan to ensure that staff have thorough written guidance that covers all aspects of safe caring.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The child’s views and feelings and day-to-day records are recorded to a high standard, and include clear reasoning for decision-making and careful reflections. The quality of these records enabled the manager to pinpoint areas for improvement regarding practice, including managing staff performance and the precise logging of child protection issues, and allowed the manager to highlight strengths in the care of the child.
p.2
This monitoring visit
While the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic introduced an added complexity to the safeguarding matter referred to in this report, the manager has acted to keep everyone as safe as possible in line with Public Health England guidance. All necessary procedures have been adhered to when managing isolation requirements. Despite the restrictions, the child has enjoyed a number of different activities with staff, and has achieved GCSE pass grades.
