Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2587233 1

p.1

Safe Haven Adolescent Care Group Ltd

Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Information about this children’s home

This children’s home is privately operated and run. It provides care and accommodation for one child who may have emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The home was registered on 10 July 2020 and this is its first inspection under these interim arrangements.

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The registered manager has been in post since the home opened. She leads and manages the home well and is supportive and conscientious in all aspects of her role.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Due to the restrictions in place relating to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, this monitoring visit was carried out off site. The visit was to investigate potential breaches of regulations. In addition, the home has not been inspected since registration. The visit included review of documents, a virtual tour of the building and discussions with children, staff and relevant professionals.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Children who come to live at this home are welcomed warmly, and immediately feel a sense that this is their home. Children are given choices to personalise and redecorate the home to their liking. Photos and murals adorn the walls; it really becomes their home. This helps the children to settle quickly. One child said, ‘If I can’t go home, I want to stay here until I am 18.’

p.1

This monitoring visit

Promoting and supporting children in education and learning is a key strength of this home. Despite the lockdown restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one child has been supported to attend education. He has excelled and made significant strides in all subject areas. As a result, plans are now in place for him to transition back into mainstream schooling. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2587233 2 This solo home cares for children with very complex needs. The untimely end to one child living at the home has resulted in the manager realising the importance of having all the information and carefully matching children with the skills and experience of the staff team. This has provided more reassurance that the needs of children can be met.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Care plans, placement plans and risk assessments are well-thought-out documents. They address all known risks and vulnerabilities and provide staff with up-to-date information on how needs can be met. This means that staff can better protect children in their care and themselves from any potential threats and/or allegations.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Equally, incident reports are detailed and staff dealing with such incidents are debriefed alongside a restorative discussion with the child. Any consequences or sanctions are proportionate and done in consultation with the child and their social worker. This collaborative approach helps children to manage and regulate their emotions better.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The need for physical intervention is rare. For one child, there has been a significant reduction in this since living at this home. This suggests that staff have developed trusting relationships with the child and are more able to de-escalate heightened behaviour. However, records relating to significant events lack management oversight and evaluation. A recommendation is made to improve practice in this area.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Not all regulation 40 notifications following a significant event are submitted to Ofsted. This breach has resulted in a requirement being made at this monitoring visit.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Staff report that they are well supported by the manager and are given opportunities to complete a range of online training. Face-to-face training is due to restart and the manager has already booked child sexual exploitation, first-aid and ligature training. This home values the advantages and benefits of face-to-face training to better equip staff when caring for vulnerable children.
