Information about this children’s home
The home provides care for up to two children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The home and manager registered with Ofsted on 5 August 2020. There were two children living at the home at the time of the visit.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Ofsted is aware of the challenges that COVID-19 (coronavirus) is currently posing to those we regulate. During this monitoring visit, the inspector took into consideration the impact of any measures being taken to slow the spread of COVID-19 by the home. Monitoring of this home was carried out remotely.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The monitoring visit was carried out following concerns identified in the independent visitor’s monthly reports. In addition, the home was registered in August 2020 and has not yet had a full inspection. The concerns arising from the independent visitor’s reports related to lack of risk assessments for children, the health needs of children not being fully known, and staff being unable to access important records on the electronic care recording system.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Children are kept safe as staff have a clear and detailed knowledge and understanding of their needs. The manager works closely with professionals to identify risks for children and the appropriate strategies to help them. This means that children no longer leave the home and go missing. There are appropriate risk assessments in place. Children have developed open and trusting relationships with staff. This management of risk, combined with positive relationships, helps children to keep themselves safe.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Children’s health needs are known and documented. Where information is missing, the manager takes appropriate action to address this. Children are supported by staff to manage their own health needs. One professional said that staff had ‘done everything possible’ to help a child get appropriate health advice. Children are Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: 2595123 2 encouraged to take responsibility for their own medication; however, the risk this may pose to other children has not been considered. The procedure by which pain relief medication is administered to children means that there may be a delay before it is given.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The visit confirmed that staff do know how to access the electronic care record system and can find important documentation. The manager and staff have become more knowledgeable and confident in using the system since the last visit by Ofsted in November 2020.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The requirement made at the last monitoring visit in relation to case records was not considered during this visit and has been carried forward. Two recommendations have been made following this visit.
