p.1
Information about this children’s home
The home is operated by private provider. It is registered to provide care for up to four young people who may have emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The current manager was granted registration in April 2020.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This monitoring visit was completed remotely. It was instigated due to concerns arising from independent visitor reports and regulation 40 notifications submitted to the regulator. Concerns were specifically in relation to allegations of abuse made by young people not being notified to the regulator and an increase in restrictive physical interventions since the last inspection.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Additionally, a recent regulation 40 notification suggested that some young people were removed from an incident for their safety. During this incident, the police were called to support those working in the home to manage one young person’s behaviour.
p.1
This monitoring visit
There are four young people currently living in this home. To ensure young people’s needs can be met, a detailed assessment is completed prior to young people moving in. This process has also ensured that young people’s complex needs do not significantly impact upon those already living in the home. For example, when young people are in crisis, others are encouraged to engage with staff and complete activities. This has ensured that all young people have positive experiences of living in a home with peers and that their safety is maintained.
p.1
This monitoring visit
There have been occasions where young people have made allegations. The registered manager responds to these quickly and effectively. She follows the home’s policies and procedures and appropriately shares concerns with the designated Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2533956 2 officer. However, on one occasion, the regulator was not notified. A requirement has been made to address this.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Physical intervention is used when necessary. When these incidents occur, staff nurture young people and support them to understand their behaviours. They are given opportunities to discuss what happened and to spend time with staff who they feel close to. This helps them to recover from difficult and stressful situations and serves to reinforce the positive relationships held within the home.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The safety and well-being of young people is important to those in the home. Risk assessments and support plans in place are robust. They are regularly updated and take young people’s views and wishes into consideration. They also include clear and comprehensive strategies for staff to follow when necessary. This provides young people with consistent, child-focused rules and boundaries.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Professionals spoken to believe that young people are safe and well cared for. One social worker said, ‘The day my young person moved to this home was the day he changed directions. Risks have significantly reduced, and my young person is more settled than ever.’
p.2
This monitoring visit
The manager and staff team have access to a good variety of training. For example, staff are given training to understand the impact of adverse childhood experiences. Therefore, staff have the relevant skills and knowledge to care for young people well. Furthermore, staff have a good understanding of how young people may use negative behaviours to communicate their needs. Because of this, staff seek to understand what young people are trying to communicate and are proactive in responding to their needs.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Reflective practice is something that leaders and managers do well. Incidents are fully evaluated and reflected upon. Lessons learned are used to inform future practice and to improve the quality of care afforded to young people.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Staff enjoy working in this home. They want young people to be safe and to succeed. They focus upon ensuring that young people have fun and are stimulated. They talk about young people positively and have high aspirations for them. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2533956 3
