Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC456474 1 SC456474

p.1

Cambian Childcare Ltd

Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Information about this children’s home

This is a privately run children’s home that provides care and accommodation for up to six male children who may have complex emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The home aims to provide high levels of support in a structured environment.

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The manager has been registered at the home since May 2020.

p.1

This monitoring visit

A monitoring visit was last completed at the home in February 2020. The last full inspection of the home occurred in September 2019.

p.1

This monitoring visit

This visit was undertaken to address specific concerns recorded in notifications sent by the provider to Ofsted. The concerns were in relation to children being in each other’s rooms, matching risk assessments, and a child saying that he did not feel safe. The inspector visited the home to meet with the children, staff and the manager.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Children like living at the home. They feel listened to and their opinions are respected. Staff actively seek to understand how children are feeling day to day. One child said, ‘They listen to me, and help me when needed.’

p.1

This monitoring visit

Another child said that he did not feel safe living at the home. Staff responded by quickly exploring with the child the reasons and were able to offer reassurance and assess that there were no safeguarding concerns. As a result, the child said he no longer felt unsafe.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The home provides children with a friendly and welcoming environment where they feel happy and are able to relax. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC456474 2 A two-week period of self-isolation in the home allowed the staff and the children to build on their existing relationships and to develop trust. The dedication shown by the staff team has helped children to increase their sense of belonging and open up to the adults who care for them.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Children are being supported to complete their education at home because of restrictions due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. When children succeed with their schoolwork, staff recognise the progress they make. This gives children a sense of achievement.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The children benefit from having a consistent daily routine and are being effectively supervised throughout the day. The home is well resourced, and children are able to take part in a wide variety of activities, such as movie nights and playing games consoles and ball games. Most activities happen in the home because of COVID-19 restrictions. Children have their own space and privacy and have fun with their peers and staff.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Planning for children moving in to the home is well thought out. The manager, with support from the clinical team, completes an impact risk assessment that evaluates if children can live together. Each child’s risk assessment has a detailed action plan for staff to follow. This helps staff to have a better understanding of the children and their physical and emotional health needs.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The registered manager provides strong leadership and the staff team feels valued. One staff member said, ‘She has brought new ideas and a sense of creativity. This has made a difference.’

p.2

This monitoring visit

The manager is a strong advocate for the children and communicates openly with professionals. When services have not been provided for children, the manager escalates these with the relevant agencies. For instance, a social worker was made aware that a child did not receive a return-home interview after a missing episode. The manager and staff ensure that children are provided with the support that they are entitled to.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Three requirements and two recommendations from the previous inspection were not reviewed during this monitoring visit. These were in relation to removing information from risk assessments without explanation, internal fire doors meeting regulations, and the storing of information. These will be carried forward to the next inspection.
