Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC406063 1 SC406063

Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This home is owned by a large private company. The children who live here have either physical or learning disabilities. The home’s statement of purpose states that the home provides a high standard of care, educational support and accommodation for up to five children and young people aged between six and 19 years.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The manager has been registered with Ofsted since May 2019. Five children were living at the home at the time of this monitoring visit.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Ofsted is aware of the challenges that COVID-19 (coronavirus) is currently posing to those we regulate. During this monitoring visit, the inspector took into consideration the impact of any measures being taken to slow the spread of COVID-19 by the home. Monitoring of this home was carried out remotely.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The monitoring visit was carried out in response to concerns identified in the monthly regulation 44 reports. In addition, the home has not been inspected since December 2019. The concerns identified by the regulation 44 visitor relate to medication errors, a safeguarding incident and children’s access to Wi-Fi.
p.1
This monitoring visit
During 2020, there were six medication errors, the last being in November 2020. The manager has investigated every medication error and has made several changes to the medication administration procedure. The changes have been discussed in team meetings and the manager has met with every staff member individually to ensure that they understand the procedure. Staff said that the new processes were better and had made recording clearer and easier.

This monitoring visit
Safeguarding concerns are reported to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner. One safeguarding concern resulted in the designated officer agreeing to the home Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC406063 2 carrying out an internal investigation. The investigation was thorough, documented fully and showed good decision-making. This internal investigation led to the manager identifying several shortfalls in staff practice. As a result, the safeguarding policy has been updated and discussed in team meetings, and various resources have been used to enhance staff understanding. The responsible individual has designed a safeguarding audit tool that will be used to assess safeguarding practice. This has been designed to help managers identify any further areas for development.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The responsible individual and staff confirmed that the Wi-Fi signal in the home does occasionally drop out for a few minutes at a time. Specialist advice has been sought, but, due to the rural location of the home, the signal cannot currently be improved. Most of the children are not affected by this as they do not spend a significant amount of time doing activities that need internet access. One child does use her tablet most days and can become frustrated when the Wi-Fi stops working. Her risk assessment outlines how staff should support her when this happens.
p.2
This monitoring visit
At the last full inspection, a requirement relating to the monitoring of the quality of care by the manager was raised. The manager now seeks feedback from other people, such as parents and social workers. This helps the manager to identify what the home is doing well and what it needs to improve on. The previous requirement has therefore been met. The recommendation made at the last inspection was not considered during this visit and has been carried forward. No further requirements or recommendations have been made following this visit.
