This monitoring visit
There is a consistent response when any young people go missing from the home. Staff search the local area and visit the known addresses that the young people may go to. Individual missing-from-care protocols and risk assessments guide staff practice. These clearly detail the threshold for police involvement. For one young person, staff and allocated police from the missing-from-care team complete independent return-home interviews. This is in response to the young person expressing their frustration with ‘too many professionals’ speaking to them. This helps the young person to share information with trusted adults and provides opportunities for them to learn from and reflect on their actions.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The risks to young people’s safety if they are missing from the home are well documented in their individual risk assessments. Staff update these risk assessments following all incidents. Young people’s support plans are also reviewed to ensure the Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2567557 2 staff’s responses are effective. Managers and staff consult with young people about their plans. This gives young people the opportunity to contribute to the strategies in place to protect them, and also means that their views are listened to and considered. For one young person, the result of this approach is that their support plans have been changed to ensure that professionals can safeguard them effectively. Consequently, missing-from-home incidents for this young person have reduced.

This monitoring visit
Professionals said that there is good communication with leaders and managers, and with staff. The registered manager and staff attend all meetings and reviews for young people. This contributes to a strong multi-agency approach to safeguarding and planning for young people. As a result, plans are clear and consider how best to engage young people and their families, while managing risks to their safety and supporting their emotional well-being.
