Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This home is owned and operated by a private provider. It is registered to provide care for one child who may have social, emotional and/or mental health difficulties.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The suitably qualified manager was registered with Ofsted in January 2021.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This monitoring visit was carried out because there were potential concerns about practice in the home. Ofsted received notifications which raised questions about the quality of management oversight of records and the ability of the staff team to meet some aspects of the child’s needs.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Ofsted last inspected this children’s home in January 2020.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The child has lived in this home for a long time and considers it her home. She has good relationships with members of staff, who she knows well. She is learning that her carers do not give up on her. The stability she experiences as a result of living in this home is helping her to develop a positive sense of self-worth. This is essential for her long-term progress.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The child continues to attend school daily. Members of staff provide the child with routines in the home. These help to mitigate some of the changes brought about by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Although the child cannot enjoy her usual range of activities, members of staff work hard to engage her in safe pastimes in and out of the home. As well as being enjoyable, this helps to maintain the child’s physical and emotional well-being.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Members of staff use their positive relationships with the child to talk to her about her care. She gives them her views on topics such as activities, menus and home Inspection report for children’s home – monitoring visit: SC465079 2 decor. Members of staff also have regular conversations with the child about matters that affect her well-being. These conversations are helping her to develop her self- awareness. This is particularly important for her emotional development.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Members of staff do not manage the child’s behaviour in a consistent way. The staff team does not have a good understanding of how trauma affects the behaviour of a child. This means that members of staff struggle to respond effectively when the child’s behaviours are unacceptable.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The monitoring undertaken by the registered manager is not effective. Although she reads and comments on documents, the registered manager does not always pursue practice shortfalls with members of staff. Gaps in documents are not always identified. The registered manager does not analyse themes that develop, and training needs are not well understood. As a result, members of staff continue to have difficulty in managing some aspects of the child’s care.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The registered manager works with a range of professionals who are involved with the child. When there are differences of opinion between the staff team and members of the professional network, the registered manager does not always seek to resolve the issues. As a result, personal feelings can impede the effectiveness of the work that is done with the child.
