Casaegis Ltd

Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The home provides care and accommodation for up to two children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The home and manager registered with Ofsted on 5 August 2020.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The monitoring visit was carried out due to concerns raised in a complaint received by Ofsted. The complaint raised concerns about the leadership of the home and questioned the provider’s ability to safeguard children and staff. The visit incorporated a blended approach of on- and off-site activity. The remote activities included telephone interviews, with the responsible individual, registered manager and other professionals, and reviewing documentation supplied electronically.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The manager was unaware of the complaint. However, the discussions and the documents provided demonstrated that she and other professionals were aware of many of the issues raised in the complaint. These issues centred upon the inexperience of the manager and staff team, and how this impacted on a child’s care and on the staff.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The home’s independent regulation 44 visitor had also picked up on and reported similar issues.

p.1

This monitoring visit

In response to this, a ‘lessons learned’ exercise was carried out to reflect on recent incidents at the home. Staff described this exercise as a positive experience. This work has begun to improve practice and decision-making.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The manager recognises that some of her decision-making had initially been naive. Admission processes were not well considered. Earlier shortfalls in management Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2595123 2 decision-making had the potential to impact on the safe care of a child who was in placement at that time and on staff.

p.1

This monitoring visit

One child has moved on from the home and there has been a period of there being no children in the home. This time has been used well to develop the staff team and review processes. Following an improved admission process, another child moved into the home the day before the monitoring visit.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The team is new and relatively inexperienced, but they have a positive, nurturing approach. Staff have undertaken a range of appropriate training and they receive regular supervision. The manager spends time with the staff individually and in groups to develop their confidence and skills. This is promoting a more consistent approach to the care and support provided to children.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The staff describe the manager as supportive, approachable and readily available, by telephone when not at the home. The manager is enabling staff to develop the confidence that they can meet the needs of the children.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The home uses an electronic recording system. Staff acknowledge that they are still learning how to use the system and confirmed that they are being provided with further training. The manager was struggling to navigate the system and was unable to locate the records relating to a recent incident. This incident had been mentioned in the complaint. The inability to be able to access records will be raised as a shortfall.

p.2

This monitoring visit

This visit did not identify serious or widespread concerns.

p.2

Recent inspection history

The home has not been previously inspected. Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2595123 3
