p.1
Information about this children’s home
The home provides care and accommodation for up to three children and young people aged between seven and 18 years with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The home has been without a registered manager since June 2020. However, a manager is in post and is applying to be registered.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This visit was conducted to review the home’s progress in addressing shortfalls that were identified during an assurance visit which was carried out by Ofsted in October 2020. These shortfalls related to restraint practice and the management oversight of restraints.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Since the last assurance visit, considerable improvements have been made. All staff have undertaken training in managing challenging behaviour, safeguarding, mental health and physical intervention. Additionally, the home’s in-house psychotherapist has delivered de-escalation training. This is positive because it has enabled staff to understand what restraint is like from the perspective of a child who has suffered from trauma.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Restraint techniques are rarely used but when restraints do happen, staff keep accurate records and hold debriefs to identify areas of potential improvement. Staff take the time to explore the underlying causes of negative behaviours. They have become more evaluative when thinking about actions they could have taken to avoid a physical intervention. Managerial oversight is evident in restraint records.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Communication with other agencies is excellent. Staff know how to report concerns and understand whistle-blowing procedures. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: 2495951 2 There are formal processes in place which enable staff to reflect on their own practice. This includes staff identifying any personal triggers that may be affecting the way that they interact with a child. Staff are sensitive to the needs of children and they work hard to provide consistency of care.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Staff complete key-work sessions with children at a pace that children feel comfortable with. As a result, children are making measurable progress and are learning what they need to do to keep themselves safe.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Since the assurance visit, a number of other improvements have also been made. For example, managers have invested in the home and it has been decorated throughout to a good standard.
