Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC456419 1 SC456419
p.1
Cambian Childcare Limited
Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This is one of a number of privately run children’s homes operated by a company. The home is registered to provide care and accommodation for one child or young person who may need support with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The manager has not yet submitted an application to register with Ofsted for this home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This monitoring visit was completed due to concerns around the leadership and management of another home overseen by the same manager. This visit took place on site. The inspector spoke to the young person, parents, professionals and staff.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The manager of the home is registered to manage another home which has recently been served with compliance notices. Decisions are yet to be made whether the manager will submit an application to register for this home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Although requirements and recommendations have been made, serious concerns were not identified at this visit. The manager has good oversight of the home and works with the deputy manager in order to make improvements in the home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
One young person living at the home with complex needs is supported by two staff. It is evident that he is making progress as a result of the team’s resilience and persistence. He has enjoyed experiences that have not previously been possible due to his presenting behaviours, including going out for a meal with staff.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Staff are knowledgeable and follow risk management plans. However, some staff have not received training in areas relating to the needs of the young person. The manager has recently requested training. However, the young person would have benefited from staff having received the training prior to the young person’s admission. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC456419 2 The young person is able to spend some time with one staff member. Risk management plans are in place regarding this, but they do not include agreements with the placing authority for lone working overnight.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Although attempts have been made to make the home homely, damage caused by the young person has made some areas look worn. The young person’s bedroom, in particular, is very bare and needs personalising.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Records evidence that the manager is able to identify actions required by staff. Risk management plans are detailed and include clear direction for staff to take. The plans are updated regularly and staff follow the steps included. As a result, the young person receives consistent care and boundaries.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The manager has not completed a review of the quality of care. This is a missed opportunity to evaluate the home’s effectiveness and seek feedback in order to direct a clear focus for the future.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Feedback received about the home was very positive. One parent said, ‘I have nothing but praise for the staff. They are professional. Communication is bar none. They are exemplary.’
p.2
This monitoring visit
Feedback about the management of the home was also positive. One social worker said, ‘The manager is really good. She is always open to ideas and suggestions. We are seriously impressed by how they manage the young person’s presentation and behaviour. I don’t think many other homes would be able to sustain this.’
p.2
This monitoring visit
Records do not accurately reflect the time the manager is present in the home. This is particularly important to track as the manager is currently managing two homes. The manager admitted that meeting the needs of both homes has been difficult.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Staff rotas also fail to allocate time for staff to hand over important information. Staff come in earlier than planned to ensure that they receive updates and make plans for the day. Relying on this goodwill increases the risk of missed communication.
