Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC472465 1 SC472465
p.1
Cambian Childcare Limited
Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The home provides care and accommodation for up to five young people who have complex needs. Staff, including the organisation’s clinical team, focus on building therapeutic relationships with young people and the promotion of positive behaviours. The home offers planned and emergency placements.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The manager is registered with Ofsted and has a degree in working with children, young people and families.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This monitoring visit took place in response to an increase in safeguarding notifications and concerns raised through the independent visitor’s monitoring of the home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The inspector found that two requirements made at the last monitoring visit undertaken in July 2020 have been met.
p.1
This monitoring visit
At the time of this visit, three young people were living in the home. Since the monitoring visit in July 2020, one young person has had a planned transition from the home to supported accommodation. Staff continue to support her while she settles into her new home. Another young person has moved from the home after significant incidents resulted in the registered manager serving immediate notice on her placement. Despite this difficult ending, staff contacted the young person following her move so that she could say goodbye to key people.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The home has experienced a difficult period, which has resulted in assaults on staff and damage to the home. This has affected the manager’s oversight of other aspects of the home. For example, the manager had not identified and addressed the quality of some case records. Further, she has not ensured that Ofsted is Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC472465 2 notified of all significant events. This has prevented Ofsted from having up-to-date information about the home.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The turbulence in the home has had an impact on young people’s experience of living in the home. This is an improving picture, and the home is becoming more settled. Young people have chosen holiday destinations, and there are plans in place for them to enjoy some time away with staff.
p.2
This monitoring visit
One young person has raised a complaint about the home. The complaint was initially investigated by an independent manager within the organisation, and the complaint was not upheld. The young person subsequently contacted Ofsted as she did not feel that her complaint had been thoroughly investigated, and she remained dissatisfied. The inspector was able to discuss this complaint with the responsible individual during this monitoring visit. The responsible individual demonstrated fairness and capacity to reflect on some aspects of practice within the home, and the complaint has been satisfactorily resolved. As a result of this, young people feel that their views and opinions are important.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Staff, managers and senior leaders have been able to reflect on recent incidents and identify areas of learning. Senior leaders have also raised a complaint to one young person’s placing authority, as they have identified that information contained in referral paperwork did not accurately reflect the young person’s complex needs. This learning from practice is being used to improve the experiences of other young people living in the home and to build effective working relationships with placing authorities.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The independent visitor identified at her last visit to the home that, in her opinion, not all young people in the home are safe. Senior managers did not agree with this assessment and have challenged this. Further, the inspector found that, despite some recent difficulties, young people receive individualised care. Staff are child focused and know young people well. As a result, young people living in this home make progress and are safe.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Staff support young people to engage in therapeutic work with the clinical team. Effective and joined-up work between the clinical team and staff results in risks for young people living in this home significantly reducing. For example, young people have developed strategies to manage their anxiety and they no longer self-harm.
p.2
This monitoring visit
The young people’s social workers provided the inspector with extremely positive feedback about the care that their young people receive. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC472465 3
