The registered manager has notified Ofsted appropriately of serious incidents. Staff rarely use physical intervention. However, recently this has been necessary. Although all staff are trained to safely use restraint, the training does not provide them with techniques specific to the needs of individual children. Children and young people who live in this home have a range of complex needs associated with trauma. Staff have a wide range of training, and the clinical team attached to the home offers bespoke training to meet children and young people’s needs. However, only two staff currently have completed training about ligature use Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC472465 2 and self-harm. Consequently, it is unclear how staff are equipped and trained to use ligature cutters and manage self-harm. This leaves children, young people and staff vulnerable to risk.

This monitoring visit
Despite this shortfall, staff know children and young people well. As a result, they manage incidents and risk appropriately. Incidents are well recorded, and appropriate debriefs take place afterwards. Staff use this reflection to improve their practice. Risk assessments identify known risks for children and they are updated following incidents. However, these updates lack detail and do not provide staff with specific guidance and strategies. For example, one child’s risk assessment does not contain sufficient detail about how staff should manage incidents when the child may harm themselves.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Social workers provided universally positive feedback about the care provided in this home. One social worker said that the home has turned one young person’s life around. This young person is currently being supported to move, to live independently. Positive relationships between staff and the young person have been the key to ensuring positive changes and a reduction in risk. Staff will continue to provide support on an outreach basis. This means that this young person will continue to benefit from support as she begins her journey towards independence.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Another young person has made significant progress, and there has been a noticeable reduction in risky behaviours. A recent psychological assessment noted this progress. This is testament to the good-quality care from staff, supported by advice and guidance from the multi-disciplinary clinical team.
p.2
