The provision requires improvement
The childminder does not always identify weaknesses in her practice and breaches of requirements. This means necessary improvements are not always made promptly enough. Nevertheless, children enjoy their time in the childminder's setting. They confidently choose from the resources she provides and become deeply engrossed in activities. Children have developed close and caring relationships with the childminder. They demonstrate that they feel safe and happy in her care. Children enjoy exploring their own ideas and interests and show pride in their achievements. For instance, the children are eager to demonstrate that they can play a simple tune using musical instruments. They beam with happiness at the praise and applause they receive from the childminder, which boost their confidence and self-esteem. Children listen well to the childminder and respond positively when they are reminded about expectations, such as sharing and taking

turns with resources. Their behaviour is good. Children are learning to assess risks and take action to keep themselves safe. For example, when crossing roads, younger children understand that they must hold the childminder's hand and older children demonstrate that they know how to look out for traffic.

need to do better?
n Records are not always readily accessible on request, and children's attendance is not accurately recorded. n The childminder ensures that her first-aid training is kept up to date. However, she does not effectively monitor the content of the first-aid box to ensure that it is always complete. n Children are kind and considerate. They develop good friendships with their peers. Younger children talk excitedly about collecting their friends from nursery and greet them with a smile. Children of different ages play harmoniously together and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to join in with their games. n The childminder provides a good range of stimulating and interesting experiences for children outdoors each day. Children strengthen their small- and large-muscle movements as they dig and make sandcastles in the childminder's garden. They practise climbing and balancing on the large apparatus in the

nearby playground. The childminder takes children to visit local stables, where they learn to ride and care for the ponies and horses. They make regular visits to the nearby wetlands centre, where they observe birds, plants and seasonal changes to enhance their understanding of the natural world. n The childminder has a few books to help children learn about different people and communities. However, she has not considered a range of other ways to enhance children's understanding of similarities and differences between themselves and others.

12 March 2020 n Children show high levels of concentration during activities. They show imagination and perseverance as they set tasks for themselves, such as building a tower from blocks or creating sandcastles. n The childminder supports children's understanding of mathematics well. During daily routines and activities, she teaches children to count and calculate. She introduces them to different shapes and encourages them to compare size and weight. n The childminder helps children to develop good language and communication skills. She uses a wide range of words when she talks to children, and uses questioning effectively to encourage them to use new words. This helps children to acquire broad and varied vocabularies. They speak clearly and confidently, and express their ideas and feelings well.

Safeguarding
The childminder knows how to identify the signs and symptoms that may indicate that a child is at risk of harm. She has a clear understanding of wider safeguarding issues, such as the risks from radicalisation and extremism. The childminder knows the procedure to follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare. She understands that she must ensure required training is kept up to date, and suitability checks are completed for all adults living in the home.
