p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's safety is compromised. The childminder has not followed the correct procedures to ensure the suitability of her assistants. Assistants whose suitability has not been checked have been left in sole charge of children. In addition, the childminder's safeguarding knowledge in relation to how to manage allegations made against herself or one of her assistants is not robust. Despite this, some children have formed close relationships with her, and most are generally happy in her care. They enter the setting confidently and help themselves to the resources that are available to them. Older children show an interest in books and look at these both independently and with the childminder. Some of the adults support children's turn taking and sharing skills through some appropriate discussion and use of praise. However, not all adults are consistent in this approach. Children are active in their play and use resources that support their physical development.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

They navigate space effectively using ride-on toys and demonstrate control and balance as they climb up on and use a small rocking horse. Children's emotional well-being is not supported effectively. Adults do not consistently support children who are new or unsettled, often leaving them to cry for extended periods.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder does not use her teaching effectively to include all children. For example, she does not respond to children's interest in activities. Where a group activity has a planned focus for a particular child, the childminder is unable to demonstrate how the learning and development needs of the other children in the group are being met. n The childminder does not always use appropriate methods or explanations to help children understand the expectations of their behaviour. For example, when older children run inside, the childminder will shout 'no running' and 'we are playing nicely'. Additionally, when children do not eat all of their food, she will repeatedly state 'your mummy will not be happy with you if you do not eat your food'. n When children are new to the setting, they are prevented from joining in play and activities with the other children. The childminder holds them on her knee or

in her arms and does not engage them in play. As a result, new children do not have the opportunity to develop their communication and language or their personal, social and emotional skills with their peers. n The childminder does not always recognise when to challenge and extend children's abilities to help them learn as much as possible. Children are not asked questions to promote their problem-solving skills and are not given enough time to answer a question before another is asked. n Children generally move around independently and explore the resources available. They use their imaginations as the engage in pretend play in the

10 March 2020 construction area. n Records are not always kept when children have an accident. In addition, these records do not identify the injuries that have been sustained by children. A minor accident that occurred during the inspection was not recorded. n The childminder fails to keep an accurate record of attendance for all children in her care. For example, she has not recorded the times the children arrive or leave the setting for a number of weeks. n Facilities for preparation of children's food are not suitable. The kitchen area in the childminder's house is not clean or hygienic. Dirty pots, pans and dishes are stacked in and around the sink and work areas. Children's meals are prepared on work surfaces and a hob with excessive food and grease debris. This puts children at risk of cross contamination of food that may no longer be fit to eat or with potential allergens. This is particularly dangerous for those children who

have allergies or intolerances. n There has been a recent high turnover of assistants at the setting. Assistants who are currently supporting the childminder from an outside agency have not been inducted effectively. The childminder has not informed them of her safeguarding policy and her expectations of them for keeping children safe. This compromises children's safety. n Parents say that they are happy with the care their children receive. They get regular communication from the childminder through communication books and an online observation system. Their children have attended for a number of years. Parents say that their children are developing a knowledge of colours and numbers.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder shows a lack of understanding of safeguarding requirements. She does not know that she has to notify the designated officer or Ofsted if an allegation is made against herself or an assistant in her employment. Additionally, staff working with her are not trained in the setting's safeguarding policy. The childminder has regularly left those who have not had their suitability checked alone with children. This compromises children's safety and well-being. The lack of cleanliness and hygiene of the food preparation areas puts children's health at risk.
