Adults have a really good understanding of the needs of the children they care for. Through working well with specialist health services, adults ensure that the most appropriate support is in place for each child. Where children have moved on from the home, sometimes unexpectedly, adults have sensitively supported children to understand the reasons for this. This reflective approach by adults is a strong example of how the therapeutic model adopted in the home is applied in practice. Children are supported well during their move into the home. Adults ensure that individual identified needs are known, which has helped to inform an in-depth assessment of children’s needs and vulnerabilities. This has helped adults to make appropriate changes to the child’s physical environment. Through regular review of the identified risks, changes are made as required. Adults therefore ensure a proportionate response to risk.

The introduction of the Anti-Bullying Ambassador role is a really good example of safeguarding practice in the home. Children take it in turns to undertake the role. Through this and the work completed to support them to undertake this role, children have been supported by adults to develop a real understanding of the nature of bullying and they know that this will be responded to appropriately. This helps to empower children while also promoting positive relationships between them. Safer recruitment practice is followed for new adults starting work in the home. Training for all adults continues to help them develop the skills that they need to meet the needs of children they care for. Supervision provided to all adults helps them to know what is expected of them in their role. This includes a clear focus on safeguarding practice. Where there are potential concerns about practice, the senior management team consults with the designated officer for advice to ensure that

there is effective oversight and that action is taken to safeguard children. Following a significant safeguarding incident, the senior management team undertook a systemic review of the home’s practice. This resulted in changes to the guidance provided to adults and additional safety measures being put in place. The senior management team ensured a proportionate response to the disciplinary process undertaken. The team undertook reflection and learning with all the adults to ensure that the changes were fully understood. There were no further incidents. Requirements from the last inspection were all met.
