p.1

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has sustained effectiveness.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The children and young people develop positive and warm relationships with staff. However, the experiences of children and young people have been mixed since the last inspection. This has resulted in some of the children and young people moving on. The manager and staff ensure that decisions are made on the grounds of safeguarding all of the children, young people and staff.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The leadership and management team has taken steps to create two separate living areas within the same building. This has enabled the children and young people with additional needs to be supported by a higher staffing ratio. This is in accordance with their individualised care plans. As a result, since the full inspection management of the environment has improved. This has minimised the effects of disruptive behaviour on other children and young people living in the home.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager and staff endeavour to ensure that the physical environment is maintained and involve the children and young people in its decor. However, because of recent damage to furniture and fittings, some areas of the home need decoration and repair.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Care planning is thorough and proactive. The manager and her staff work with other agencies to ensure that children and young people are safeguarded and that their well-being is central to their care. Children and young people respond well to welfare calls and agreed expectations when out in the community. This has reduced the time that children and young people who go missing are away from the home.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The staff continue to strengthen their relationships with parents and families. They support and provide opportunities for children and young people and their families to have family time in the home and in the community. One parent commented, ‘The staff and the home are amazing, they are doing fantastic work.’ This has enabled the children and young people to develop trust and a sense of family in a supportive environment.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Children and young people take part in a range of activities and enjoy spending time with friends, peers and staff. Staff provide the children and young people with opportunities to discuss aspects of their lives in purposeful one-to-one sessions with key-workers. However, further steps are required to effectively address issues of dependency on tobacco, to improve the health of children and young people.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The deputy manager is now the acting manager and has submitted her application to register with Ofsted. She has stepped up to the role with confidence and is developing a team that shares her commitment to improving the lives of the children Inspection report children’s home: 2520922 3 and young people. She is passionate and advocates strongly on behalf of the children and young people. This has led to improvements in educational attendance and attainment by the children and young people.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Monitoring and audit processes are good. However, the review of quality of care report required by regulation has not been sent to Ofsted. This diminishes the effectiveness of independent scrutiny of the services provided to children and young people. Inspection report children’s home: 2520922 4

Recommendations

 For children’s homes to be nurturing and supportive environments that meet the needs of their children, they will, in most cases be homely, domestic environments. (‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 15, paragraph 3.9) This is with particular reference to the manager continuing with the planned maintenance work to the home to repair the damage previously caused.  The registered person should ensure that, in line with their individual health plans and the ethos of the home, children are offered advice, support and guidance on health and well-being to enhance, and supplement that provided by their school through Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). Staff should have the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to help children understand and where necessary work to change negative behaviours in key areas of health and well- being such as, but not limited to, nutrition and healthy diet, exercise, mental

(‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 35, paragraph 7.18)  The processes the registered person puts in place to enable such a review to take place, should allow for a report to be generated at least once every six months.
