Placement matching is carefully considered. Managers take into account the needs of the existing residents and the needs of the child moving into the home. They also ensure that staff have the right skills and experience to meet the child’s needs. Moving into the home is done at the child’s pace and may include short visits, activities and overnight stays. This helps the child to settle quickly into the home.

Children feel secure and settled and subsequently make life-changing progress over a short period of time. For example, a child who lacked independence skills, used a soother and was underweight because of a poor diet is now more independent, has gained weight and no longer uses a soother. Children have learned how to shop, cook and use public transport. Behaviour has significantly improved at the home and at school. This has enabled learning to take place. A parent said: ‘She never used to smile, but now she’s a different girl, so happy and chatty. She does so much. I just know she’s happy.’
p.2

Children experience rich and varied activities that help them to develop their skills, confidence and self-esteem. For example, they have invited their families and friends to various house parties to celebrate significant events. Children also grow vegetables in the garden and have enjoyed theme parks, trampoline parks and going to the cinema. The children have also been on holiday with staff.
