p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children are safe and well cared for. They developed close bonds with the childminder, who is kind and caring in her approach. This supports children's emotional well-being and helps them to feel safe and secure. The childminder knows the children in her care well. However, she does not use her knowledge to accurately assess children's progress and to plan a challenging curriculum that is closely targeted to children's next steps.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The childminder does show some positive interactions with children. For instance, she supports children's counting and helps them to develop problem-solving skills as they build using plastic bricks. The childminder gets children to think about the number of bricks they will need to fill in gaps in towers they have built. This supports children's early mathematical development.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Parents are positive about the childminder and comment that their children are happy in her care. The childminder talks with parents daily to provide information about what their children have done during the day. The childminder has thought about how she will work in partnerships with other settings that children will shortly be starting at.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder has made some improvements since her last inspection. However, she does not access professional development opportunities to extend her knowledge and improve her teaching skills, including some mandatory training. She accessed a first-aid course but was unaware that this did not meet the criteria set out in the early years foundation stage statutory framework. n Children develop an enjoyment of books. They choose stories and sit with the childminder to read them. The childminder provides clear explanations to describe objects. For instance, she talks with children about the use of different tools, such as hammers and screws. n Children have daily opportunities to be physically active and enjoy the fresh air. For example, they visit local parks and soft-play centres to develop their physical skills. The childminder also supports children to develop their fine motor skills as they peel stickers and learn to use scissors.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder does not make use of self-evaluation to identify aspects of her practice that could be better. As a result, she does not have an accurate view of her strengths and does not identify areas where she could improve her knowledge, skills and practice. She does not take into consideration the views of children and parents to support this process. n The childminder makes some observations of children and can identify some next steps in learning. However, she is not using assessments to accurately

need to do better?

18 February 2020 monitor the progress children are making. As a result, she is not planning a challenging curriculum to support children to make the best possible progress. n The childminder offers praise and encouragement as children play, which boosts children's self-esteem. Children behave well and listen to the childminder. The childminder gets children to tidy up toys they have finished with before getting out more resources.

p.2

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has completed training in child protection. She understands her role in protecting children. The childminder can identify signs that would give her cause for concern and knows the correct procedure to refer any concerns. She knows what to do if an allegation were to be made against her or a member of her family. The childminder supervises children throughout the day. She uses risk assessments effectively and carries out daily checks on all areas of her home to ensure children play in a safe and secure environment.

n undertake professional development opportunities to improve knowledge and skills across all aspects of practice and to keep up to date with changes to legislation n use self-evaluation to recognise ways to further improve practice that help to raise the quality of the provision to a higher level, including seeking the views of children and parents.
