p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder provides generally good learning experiences for children and supports them well during play. Overall, she has high expectations for what children can achieve. However, when children encounter difficulties in their learning and development, the childminder sometimes does not address their needs effectively. Nevertheless, children have plenty of fun with the childminder. She is a good play partner, which helps to ignite children's curiosity and interest in activities. This helps them to build on what they know, remember and can do. The childminder has a calm and gentle approach that puts children at ease. Parents report that their children settle extremely quickly into her care and feel safe and secure. Children develop close bonds with the childminder and show that they are confident and happy in her care. The childminder models respect and good manners to children. She gives them gentle reminders about their behaviour.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children are very polite and caring and are learning to manage their feelings and frustrations. The childminder has not informed Ofsted about a new member of the household. As a result, Ofsted has been unable to determine their suitability.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children benefit from plenty of space to play and choose from a wide range of activities, both indoors and outdoors. They enjoy their time with the childminder and are keen to learn. n The childminder assesses children's development and focuses her teaching on what children need to learn next. However, when children do not achieve typical expectations in some aspects of their learning, she does not support them as well as possible. Despite identifying their needs and adapting her teaching, she does not share her concerns swiftly. She has weak knowledge of the strategies and support available to help her to meet these children's needs more precisely. n Children develop good habits that help to promote their good health. For example, they learn about the importance of washing their hands and talk about the dangers of germs. They also benefit from healthy meals, snacks and drinks and plenty of fresh air and exercise.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder talks to children as they play and introduces new words. For example, while they play with dough, she names parts of the hand, such as palms and fingertips. She further encourages their use of language through asking some skilful questions. Children describe their thoughts and ideas in response, using imaginative language. n Communication with parents is good and is well established. The childminder spends time with them to learn about children's individual routines and needs. This helps her to meet their medical and dietary needs very well. n The childminder identifies when children are doing well in their development and provides additional challenge for them during play. For example, she provides

13 February 2020 puzzles with more pieces when children find more simple ones too easy. n Children see an array of images in the childminder's home of different families and communities. This sparks conversations about the similarities and differences between themselves and others. For example, while looking at an image of a child with disabilities, they chat about the child's need for a wheelchair. n The childminder includes numbers in activities and routine parts of the day. Children learn to count and compare objects and use language relating to shapes and positions. They show very good abilities in this area of learning. n Children develop good independence. They manage their own self-care needs well, such as handwashing and putting on their coats and shoes. n The childminder reviews her practice and takes steps to keep her knowledge up to date. For example, she attends some training courses and shares knowledge

with other childminders at network meetings. n Partnerships with other settings that children attend are well embedded. There is a good two-way flow of information about children's development and well- being. This helps to provide a consistent approach to their care and learning experiences.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder's failure to inform Ofsted about a new member of the household does not have a significant impact on children's welfare. This is because the childminder has taken some steps to check this person's suitability by requesting to see a recent check through the Disclosure and Barring Service. Furthermore, this person does not have unsupervised contact with children. The childminder has appropriate knowledge of how to identify children at risk from harm. She knows what to do if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She keeps her knowledge up to date through contact with her local authority.
