The provision requires improvement
Children have formed close bonds with the childminder and have some enjoyable learning experiences. For example, the childminder provides children with binoculars so they can watch for the birds on the green outside of her window. Children identify the birds they see and mark a chart so they can keep track of all the different species. They are excited to see squirrels playing.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children's behaviour is good. They play together harmoniously and clearly have affectionate bonds with each other. The childminder is a good role model for children. She is attentive and provides positive praise to enhance their confidence and self-esteem. Children have an interest in making marks. They choose their writing materials and draw pictures with happy enthusiasm. Older children are beginning to attempt to write their names. The childminder introduces children to mathematical concepts appropriate for their age. For example, children sing counting songs and begin to count objects out loud.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
The childminder knows children well and has discussions with parents about their children's learning experiences. Overall, children make good progress and develop the key skills they need for school. However, there are gaps in the childminder's knowledge of the early years foundation stage. She is unaware of some of her legal responsibilities and therefore, not all requirements are met.
p.2
need to do better?
n The childminder is unaware of her duty to carry out a progress check for children when they are aged between two and three years of age. Parents have not had a written summary, as required, that helps to identify strengths and weaknesses of their children's development. That said, the childminder knows the children well and provides activities that generally reflect their interests and capabilities. n Some children have been attending the childminder's setting for some months. However, the childminder has not recorded the mandatory information she must keep. The risk to children is minimised as the childminder has recorded parents' emergency contact details on her phone and she has some understanding of children's medical needs. Nonetheless, other required information is not available. n The childminder is yet to establish partnerships with other settings children attend. She is not aware of children's experiences in order to inform her

12 February 2020 after returning to childminding after a career break. She is yet to evaluate her provision to consider how to address the gaps in her knowledge and develop her early years practice. The childminder has kept up to date with mandatory training, such as her first-aid certificate and safeguarding, to promote these aspects of children's welfare. n Children have good opportunities to learn about the wider world. They go for walks and enjoy fresh air and exercise daily. The childminder makes good use of the outdoors to encourage children to experience nature and learn about the birds and animals that live around them. n Children progress well in their personal, social and emotional development. The childminder teaches children good manners, and develops their skills in sharing and turn taking. She takes children to groups where they socialise with others and make friends. Children have warm, affectionate attachments to the

childminder, who is kind and caring. n Parents clearly value the childminder and believe their children are safe and well cared for. They say children have settled well and love playing with other children. The childminder has daily discussions with parents and sends them a weekly account of their children's learning experiences. She offers guidance on children's development so parents can support their children's learning at home. n The childminder encourages children's love of books. She reads to them with enthusiasm, using her voice to capture children's attention. Younger children have an interest in books with flaps and buttons, and show delight at the noises created when buttons are pushed. Older children have a good understanding of how stories are constructed. They speculate on what happens next and how the story might end.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder has a good understanding of the possible indicators of child abuse. In another job role, she regularly attends safeguarding training that broadens her understanding of the wider aspects of abuse. The childminder has existing links to the agencies she must contact if she has concerns about a child's welfare. She understands her local authority procedures for reporting abuse or neglect. The childminder keeps her home secure and ensures children are safely supervised at all times.
